It is said that by abandoning all faults, one obtains the power to endure all wrongdoings. Therefore, by abandoning the states of no leisure through faith and accumulating virtue, the person with faith is rare because they are far superior to others. As it says in that very text: 'There is no obstacle to the gate of faith arising. Abandoning the states of no leisure is the supreme leisure. Faith is what obtains the state of victory. Those who have faith in such a Dharma, they are rare among the assemblies of individual beings.' Therefore, faith is the first of the seven treasures, and having it is supreme. In the Secret Inconceivable One, it says: 'That one possesses faith, joy, aspiration, and a mind without defilement. Without doubt about actions and their results, without hesitation or double-mindedness, possessing aspiration, realization, and conviction, knowing that virtuous and non-virtuous actions and their results are not wasted, one does not commit non-virtuous actions even for the sake of one's life, but practices the ten paths of virtuous action. Through generosity, enjoyment increases; through moral discipline, higher realms; through learning, wisdom; and through meditation, all qualities increase.' The faults of lacking faith are: 'Those without the fortune for liberation have no faith at all. Its faults are exceedingly limitless.' The faults of an unbeliever without even a sesame seed's worth of faith, who has no fortune for the Dharma, are immeasurable, but to summarize briefly: 'Like a stone at the bottom of the sea, separated from the shore of liberation; like an unyielding boat, there is no time to be freed from existence; like a person with a severed arm, there is no share of virtue; like a burnt seed, there is no sprout of enlightenment; like a blind person, there is no appearance of the form of Dharma; like a wild animal trapped in a pit, one wanders in samsara forever.' Just as a stone at the bottom of the ocean does not rise to the surface, without faith, it is impossible to reach the shore of liberation. Just as an unyielding boat cannot reach the other shore, without faith, it is impossible to be freed from the river of suffering. Just as a person with a severed arm cannot take anything even if they go to the golden island, without faith, it is impossible to attain qualities in one's being. Just as a seed burnt by fire does not sprout, without faith, it is impossible for the sprout of enlightenment to grow. Just as a blind person goes to a temple, without faith, it is impossible to see the appearance of the Dharma. Just as a wild animal falls into a pit, without faith, whatever one does becomes an action of samsara, and one is never liberated.

There is a fault of not attaining enlightenment without faith. The Sutra of Ten Dharmas says: For those without faith, white dharmas will not arise. That is, without faith, the loss is great, so faith must be generated. Then, the place of arising is: The six places where white dharma arises from faith are: Desire-faith arises from being weary of existence. Adoration-faith arises from being weary of bad friends. Respect-faith arises from being weary of this life. Joy-faith arises from excellent places. Trust-faith arises from hearing about cause and effect. Determined mind-faith arises from hearing and thinking. Desire-faith arises from seeing the nature of the realm of samsara. Adoration-faith arises from being weary of sinful friends. Respect-faith arises from the wonderful support of the Three Jewels. Joy-faith arises from the support or stories of excellent places. Trust-faith arises from hearing about cause and effect. Faith in the Dharma arises from hearing profound teachings. If these do not arise, focus on the nature of those places and cause them to arise. The Bodhisattva Pitaka says: Having faith means having more faith in higher places, that is, relying on virtuous friends, wanting to see the noble ones, wanting to hear the sacred Dharma, believing in karma and its maturation, and knowing that Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Shravakas are virtuous friends, relying on them with faith and pleasing them. Relying on the causes of increasing faith to increase it further: Relying on causes to increase it further is also: Relying on the holy ones and virtuous friends, looking at the sutras and tantras, Thinking about death and believing in karma and its effects, Hearing, thinking, and meditating are more diligent than before, From this, faith will naturally increase. Relying on the holy lama and generating devotion from the heart increases it. Relying on special friends who blend Dharma and one's own mindstream increases it. Looking at profound sutras and tantras increases it. Thinking about death without distraction increases it. Hearing and seeing stories of karma and its effects increases it. Doing more profound meditation and practice than before increases it. From the inconceivable secret, one will not engage in wrongdoing and will do the deeds praised by the noble ones. Thus, everything is from each of the doors
