Accumulate the three virtues, rely on the holy ones, and accomplish the essential meaning. At the time of death and in the perilous straits of the bardo, the refuge and companion are the holy guru with the qualities previously described. The excellent Three Jewels—Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. The excellent yidam deities, such as the peaceful and wrathful ones, the mandala, and the assembly of dakinis. They lead the way and dispel obstacles, in order to establish one in the state of great bliss and liberation. Therefore, from this very moment, strive with great diligence to rely on these three excellent ones. That which is indispensable when relying is a virtuous friend, so rely on the guru inseparably. That which is indispensable as a place of refuge is the Three Jewels, so take refuge in the Three Jewels. That which is indispensable for cultivation is the practice of Dharma, so practice virtue without bias. That which is indispensable as resources is the two accumulations, so accumulate them constantly without negligence. That which is indispensable as a dwelling is meditation, so build the fortress of tranquility and insight. That which is indispensable as a friend is a person endowed with Dharma, so associate with Dharma brothers and sisters with respect. That which is indispensable as a result is the three kayas, so strive diligently to attain Buddhahood. As it says in the Sutra on Admonishing the King: "O great king, at that time, in that era, the Dharma will be a continent, a place, a protector, and a support." For example, fire is for those afflicted by cold, a cool room is for those afflicted by heat, cool water is for those afflicted by thirst, shade is for guests who are tired and weary, a vehicle is for those traveling a long road, a good dwelling is for those who are sleeping, good food is for those who are hungry, satisfaction is for those who are tormented, a guide is for those who have lost their way, a doctor is for those who are afflicted by illness, a rope is for those who are sinking in mud, a boat is for those who are being carried away by floods, a bridge is for that which is difficult to cross, a platform is for that which is frightening, a lamp is for a dark place, a ship is for the great ocean, wealth is for the poor, a friend is for those who are working, a tool is for cutting, armor is for entering the battlefield, a good escort is for fear, an army is for fighting, grain is for famine, an explainer is for doubt, a dwelling is for wandering, and a protector is for danger. And so on. Through such examples and reasoning, all actions such as walking, standing, sitting, and lying down
