If all plants, trees, and living beings are ground into powder, they have no chance to escape quickly, or deceive with wealth, or resist with strength, or escape by means, or resist with the power of medicine, mantras, and substances. Similarly, great kings face the great fears of birth, aging, sickness, and death, and they have no chance to escape quickly or resist with wealth and strength. Aging destroys youth, sickness destroys the happiness of being without illness, decline destroys all perfections, and death destroys life and lifespan, and cannot be prevented in any way. Thinking about many examples of impermanence generates renunciation: like the guests at a market and the trees by the water's edge, the sound of thunder and clouds, and the movement of the sun and moon. Consider impermanence, change, and swift death. The guests at a market gather for a moment and then disperse, and there are terrifying enemies on the road. Similarly, when we part from each other, we are frightened by the demon of the Lord of Death and the appearances of the bardo. Just as we must cross a dangerous mountain pass on the road, we go to the dangerous mountain pass of death. Just as there are cliffs and happiness and suffering on the road, we go separately to the realms of gods and the lower realms. Just as the guests experience happiness and suffering separately, we experience the suffering of each of the six realms. As it is said in the Great Nirvana Sutra: Ignorant and wicked people, like guests at a market, disperse and enter a great cliff, helpless and alone, the road is extremely long, and even traveling day and night, they cannot reach the end, lost in the terrifying darkness, without light or lamps, the road ahead is full of obstacles, going to a helpless place, suffering from sorrow just by seeing it, the bodies are different, but they go to a cliff where they do not know where they are going. Furthermore, one's own body is like a tree growing on a cliff by the water's edge, washed away by the demon of the Lord of Death like a river. The body is like a dilapidated house in summer, destroyed by the demon of the Lord of Death like rain. The body is like an old tree on a cliff, felled by the black wind of the elements of the Lord of Death. The body is like dry wood or a pile of grass.

Therefore, one should always generate renunciation, because the Lord of Death, like a host of flames, burns everything; the body is like an autumn flower, and the Lord of Death, like the wind of the seasons, withers it. As stated in the Sutra Requested by Shri Datta: The body is like a tree by the water's edge, swaying and moving; like an old house, it needs to be repaired to be maintained. Like a river, it flows towards the ocean of death; like a bubble, a piece of wood on the water, a mirage. Having examined it in this way, for this body full of faults, one should reverse all self-love and attachment to the body, abandon all desires for life, and without clinging to it, practice the perfection of pāramitā. Thus it is. Just as the sound of thunder and the echo of a valley are loud but without trace, whether others praise or slander me, whether it is pleasing or displeasing, one should not accept or reject anything. One should also realize that one's own speech is like the echo of a valley. Knowing all dharmas in this way, one can reverse the thoughts of liking and disliking. As stated in the Great Play Sutra: The qualities of desire are like sound, image, and the echo of a valley; even hearing them, do not cling to the characteristics, look to your own nature. Thus it is. Just as clouds, fog, and rainbows in the sky appear for a while but eventually vanish, the external appearing objects and the internal mind of acceptance and rejection, all appear suddenly and disappear suddenly, so do not cling to them, you should train in this way. The coming and going of breath should also be viewed as the same. As stated in the Explanation of the Intention Sutra: The coming and going of breath is impermanent, like clouds, fog, hail, and smoke; look at how they vanish on their own without cause or condition. Thus it is. Thinking about the people and animals who have died in the past and those who are heard to have died now, and applying this to oneself internally. As stated in the previous sutra: Sentient beings, especially the human body, in other countries and in one's own land, seeing examples of the death of relatives, friends, enemies, and acquaintances, yet not knowing that they themselves will die, are truly foolish. Thus it is. Observing the extinguishing of the sun, moon, and lamps, etc., thinking that the appearances of this life will eventually disappear, and the clinging to the self-luminous mind will also vanish, everything is impermanent. As stated in the previous sutra: The sun, moon, stars, and planets are moved by the wind, just as the flame of a lamp is moved by the wind; this life is short and does not stay for even a moment, one should strive to accomplish great deeds. Thus it is. Because the Dharma is the only friend, it is advised to rely on it: At the time of death, the Dharma is the best friend.
