Thus it is. For the Nagas, it is like Garuda, elephants, and lions; for the assembly of grass and plants, it is like fire. Death makes those with power powerless; death steals life, like a flood sweeping away trees. People go alone, without companions or friends. Due to the ripening of one's own fruits, there is no autonomy. As stated in the Nirvana Sutra: Though life is long, it will inevitably perish, therefore, everything here will certainly die. Wealth declines, youth is destroyed by old age, beauty is eroded by disease, and life is cut off by death. Therefore, because it is impossible to determine when one will die, one must contemplate the certainty of death. Because there is no decrease or increase, it is impossible to determine when one will die. Merely the passing of days and nights, months and years, morning and evening, brings one closer to death. Because of decline, life will not increase, only decrease. Like the shadow of the setting sun, life decreases; like a granary being emptied, life is exhausted; like a hole in a pond, life is exhausted. Similarly, like clouds vanishing in the sky, water flowing down a steep mountain, arriving before the executioner, a drop of water flowing into the ocean, a giant shooting an arrow, leading sentient beings to the slaughterhouse, life decreases and death is certain. As stated in the Bodhicharyavatara: Life is constantly diminishing, with no increase but only decrease, how can I not die? Like cotton being burned, it vanishes in an instant; like water leaking from cupped hands, it is exhausted without being noticed, this is a great fault. The great Brahmin Saraha once sang in the Doha Vajra Song: Alas! Beautiful woman, hands filled with water, just as the water drips away, she does not notice the passing. Moreover, because there is no fixed time for life, one will die. Because of unexpected cliffs, waterfalls, swords, poison, ghosts, and so on, which interrupt, the time of death is uncertain. Even without obstacles, it will certainly die because it becomes shorter in an instant. As stated in the Udanavarga: Some die in their mother's womb, some die immediately after birth, some die just as they are able to toddle, and some die just as they are able to run. Some are old, some are young, and some are in their prime. They will all die in turn, so, for these people, who can be sure that they are young and alive? Like trees with ripening fruits, living beings will all die.

das pa las: Life's lifespan is destroyed by demons, and there is nothing that is eternal Dharma. As said before, constantly tormented by illness, always flowing like impure things, the body diminished by old age and death is ugly and unsuitable. It is said in the Bodhisattva Pitaka that there are nine causes of sudden death: eating unsuitable food, eating too much even when full, eating the next meal before the previous one is digested, holding back urination and defecation instead of excreting them on time, the patient not listening to the doctor and nurse, walking at night being struck by ghosts and powerful spirits, taking emetics but suppressing vomiting, using violent actions without examination, and carelessly engaging in sexual intercourse with women. It is said in the King of Medicine Sutra that the other nine situations, such as doctors mixing non-medicinal substances, are also included here. Therefore, there are many causes of death, and one may die while doing something or before it is finished, so one cannot be complacent thinking that one will not die in this life. At the time of death, nothing follows except good and evil, so nothing can help. The King's Admonition Sutra says: Great King, the life of people is short and impermanent, you should be afraid of the next world. Time is pressing, and the king will eventually leave, and neither enjoyment, friends, nor relatives will follow. Wherever beings go from wherever they come, karma follows like a shadow. Also, in the "Specifically Spoken Collection" it says: This thing has been done, now here, after those are finished, I will do this. When people think like this, old age, sickness, and death will manifest and destroy. Therefore, no appearance of this life can help, so it shows disgust: When death comes, residence, enjoyment, relatives, bravery, army, and friends, etc., nothing can help, so practice the sacred Dharma. That is to say, the residence one relies on at the time of death cannot help, even the palace of the gods must be left behind. Hiding in strong land cannot escape either, in the Vinaya Pitaka it says: Wherever one resides, there is no place that can prevent death, it does not exist anywhere. Not in the air, nor in the ocean, not in the heavens, nor in the mountain caves.
