Later, regretting, they say, "Alas!" Like that, this leisure and endowment, exemplified, is also difficult to obtain. Like a turtle's neck entering a yoke-hole in the middle of the ocean, it is as likely as being freed from the lower realms and becoming human. Similarly, it is as difficult as a pea sticking to a smooth wall when thrown against it. Even if one becomes human, it is rare to be born in the central lands. For example, a blind turtle at the bottom of the ocean comes to the surface once every hundred years, and a single yoke-hole is constantly moved by the wind, never staying in one place. The chance of these two meeting, with the turtle's neck entering the hole, is even rarer than obtaining a human body from the lower realms. The Bodhicharyavatara says, "Therefore, the Bhagavan said, 'The turtle's neck entering the yoke-hole of a floating yoke in the great ocean, is extremely difficult to obtain a human body.'" Furthermore, obtaining a human body from samsara is as difficult as throwing a pea against a smooth wall and having it stick. The Essence of the Moon Sutra says, "It is also difficult to be freed from the eight unfree states and become human." Although there are many opportunities to obtain leisure and endowment, it is as difficult to enter the sacred Dharma from among these as it is for a Chakravartin king to arise. The Golden Light Sutra says, "It is also difficult to encounter the Dharma and practice yoga." One should think that the appearance of a Buddha in the world is rarer than the Udumbara flower, and therefore one should enter the Dharma and strive diligently. The Nirvana Sutra says, "The Udumbara flower does not grow in all places, but only in the garden on the northern peak of the Anavatapta lake. It does not grow at all times, but only when a Buddha appears in the world. And when it blooms, it becomes very lush when the Buddha turns the wheel of Dharma, and when the Buddha passes into Nirvana, it withers and falls to the ground. Therefore, the appearance of a Buddha is extremely rare." The Avatamsaka Sutra says, "A guide appearing in the world, is difficult to find in hundreds of thousands of kalpas." It is also difficult to practice the meaning of what one has heard about the Dharma properly.

And so on. The Udumbara flower is rare to appear in the world. Therefore, entering the Dharma and encountering the correct path is also rare. Just as it is difficult for a thread to pass through the eye of a needle, it is rare to practice the path that has been realized according to the Dharma. Just as it is difficult to obtain a wish-fulfilling jewel from an island in the sea, it is also difficult to find a true Lama. Therefore, think about these things and strive to practice! The example of the Udumbara flower is regarded here as an intermediate explanation. The former meaning is that it is rare for a Buddha to appear in the world, and the latter meaning is that it is also difficult to practice and enter the Holy Dharma according to the Dharma. Moreover, it is difficult to generate even for a moment the virtuous thought of "I will practice the Dharma." Know that generating such a thought is the compassion of the Buddha. For example, just as it is difficult for lightning to appear in the darkness of night. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: "Just as in the night amidst dark clouds, a flash of lightning briefly illuminates everything, likewise, by the power of the Buddha, in the world, virtuous and wise thoughts arise only occasionally." Therefore, entering the gate of the Dharma of the Great and Small Vehicles is even rarer, like the Udumbara flower. Even more difficult than this is encountering the unmistaken path to liberation, because most people are obscured by karmic obscurations and deceived by demons, and thus enter wrong or inferior paths. As it is said in the Sutra of the Arrayed Tree: "It is also extremely difficult to encounter the true Dharma." Even more difficult than this is striving to put into practice what has been heard, just as it is difficult for a thread to pass through the eye of a fine needle. In the Sutra Spoken by the Buddha on the Treasury of Great Vehicle Bodhisattvas it says: "Generating the mind of enlightenment with compassion, guarding the precepts with reverence at the cost of one's life, believing in and admiring the meaning of emptiness, and diligently practicing these, is also very rare." In short, meeting a qualified Lama as mentioned above and hearing the essential Dharma is more difficult than a captain finding a jewel on an island in the sea. Therefore, one should constantly rely on the Lama, not disobey the Lama's teachings, practice according to the Lama's instructions, and never cause the Lama any displeasure, but strive to please the Lama through all means and methods. As it is said in the Sutra of the Arrayed Tree: "Son of good family, your virtue..."
