This, the various phenomena that appear, have the nature of phenomena. They do not exist as real, because their essence is free from existence and non-existence, arising and ceasing. If a pot arises when it exists as a pot, then it is already established as a pot, so it is not appropriate to arise; if it arises when it does not exist, then it is impossible for existence to arise from non-existence, because they are contradictory substances. Fourth, just the knowable is not established as real, because it does not perform a function. A moment does not perform a function, because when it intends to perform a function, it ceases and is gone. It does not perform it gradually, because it excludes momentariness and continuity. Fifth, just the appearance is not established as real, because it is dependent on interdependence, like an image. If a thing were established by its own nature, it would not depend on causes and conditions, because it is already established as a thing. Being interdependent implies being empty. For example, when a stick and a mantra come together, a horse and an ox appear. Just as the horse and ox are empty, so too, whether coarse or subtle, when one depends on the other and appears as another form, the form changes, so it is empty of the former. The nature is not separate from the previous, so it is empty of the latter. When the horse and ox appear, the form is not in the stick and mantra, so it is empty; the essence is not established as a horse and ox, so it is empty. As it says in the Root Wisdom: "Apart from dependent arising, there is no dharma. Therefore, apart from emptiness, there is no dharma." In this way, mountains, houses, handsome men, various women, whatever appears, all coarse appearances are empty of being coarse from the collection of particles, and the subtle momentary nature is empty of continuity. Therefore, we should understand that interdependent appearance is just a clear appearance without inherent existence. Appearing to arise and so on is the nature of emptiness. As Nagarjuna said: "If there is no emptiness, there is nothing at all." And: "You said that all arising is like an illusion." Appearing to arise is grasping at a clear form that has no basis, so it happens like a dream. As it says in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life: "When there is no object, the non-existence of that is clearly false. Without touching the object to be examined, one does not grasp its non-existence. For example, in a dream, when a child dies, the thought

Non-apprehension is: The conceptualization of existence is an obstacle, and that too is false. Thus it is said. The reasoning of neither permanence nor destruction is: The appearing phenomenon is not real, because it is neither destruction nor non-destruction. Furthermore, if it is destruction, does the pot destruct when it exists or when it does not exist? It is unreasonable for it to destruct when it exists, because the meaning of destruction is that existence becomes non-existence, which contradicts this. It is unreasonable for it to destruct when it does not exist, because existence and non-existence cannot be the same entity, therefore destruction is not established. It is not non-destruction, because moments and particle changes, as well as time changes, appear. Therefore, it is not reasonable for one thing to be both existence and non-existence, so it is not established. As it says in the Root Wisdom: For something that exists for a while, cessation is not reasonable. What is the reason for one thing to be both existence and non-existence? For something that becomes non-existence, cessation is also not reasonable. Thus it is said. The reasoning of change and non-change is: The appearing phenomenon should be unreal, because it is neither change nor non-change. Furthermore, does the thing change to another state or not change? If it changes, then even an old person would change into a young person, because it is a state of change. Moreover, for permanence, change is not established. If it is not permanent, then when change appears, because of cessation, change is not established. There is also no cause for change, because it is refuted by analyzing the parts. If it does not change, then it is impossible for a young person to change into an old person. Because that and not that are not established, there is also no change. As it says in the Root Verses: For that, there is no other change, and for not that, there is also no existence. Because the young do not age, because the aged do not age. Thus it is said. Also, it is not established in its own time, the young are not aging, because aging and the entity are contradictory. Similarly, the old do not age, because at the moment of aging itself, the agent and the object are contradictory, and aging is also meaningless. The refutation of the four dharmas has already been explained in the context of the Hearers. Therefore, all the proofs of those who assert reality are efforts to heal a dream city, so it is more virtuous that a lion's tooth is not gnawed by a fox. For any view of the opponent, any one of these reasonings can shatter it into dust.
