In the teachings of Sātyāyana, both existence and non-existence are refuted. Thus it is said. The Ratnāvalī states: Furthermore, if one grasps wrongly at this, fools with the pride of the wise, abandoning the nature of the intolerable, will go together to Avīci. Thus it is said. Now, to briefly explain the tenets of the Prāsaṅgika Madhyamaka school, the pinnacle of the Mahāyāna among Buddhist insiders: The ultimate intention of the Buddhas, the Prāsaṅgika refutes all elaborations. All phenomena are interdependent, empty, and without inherent existence. Through the gateway of the two truths, illusion-like and free from extremes, the paths and fruits are brought to ultimate perfection. That which teaches the intention of the Teacher, the Bhagavan, without distortion, is the Prāsaṅgika Madhyamaka. And the first to open the way for guiding its chariot was the protector Nāgārjuna, prophesied by the Bhagavan in the Great Drum Sutra, who dispelled the thick clouds of wrong views with the stainless sun of wisdom. The commentators on the meaning of his treatises, the six collections of reasoning, were Āryadeva, Buddhapālita, Bhāviveka, Candrakīrti, and others. Among these, the noble Candrakīrti, endowed with unseizable wisdom and compassion, understood the Teacher's intention without distortion and composed the commentary on the meaning of the Madhyamaka Root Verses, the Madhyamakāvatāra, and the commentary on the words, the Prasannapadā, thus causing the sun of the Prāsaṅgika Madhyamaka, the ultimate intention of the Buddha, to rise in Jambudvīpa, thereby dispelling the thick clouds of wrong views. Here, to briefly state the undistorted meaning of that treatise: Nothing whatsoever is inherently established in its own nature, and because all assertions are connected with clinging to reality, the tenets of those who assert inherent existence have contradictions within their own system of tenets. And for those who assert that things are established by their own power, their system can be refuted by conventional valid cognition. After refuting, there is no need to establish one's own thesis, as in the Svātantrika school. If I have any thesis, then I have this fault. Since I have no thesis, I am only without fault. In this way, one makes it understood. Here, to ascertain its meaning, there are three: The way of refuting elaborations by not asserting anything inherently.

The way to establish the appearance in terminology without negating it. Explaining other ways of establishing acceptance and non-acceptance. The first is that from the very moment when all phenomena appear as arising, ceasing, abiding, etc., there is no inherent nature whatsoever, because they are like reflections. Since there is neither establishment nor non-establishment, nor acceptance nor rejection, the five great reasonings destroy all tenets of those who assert entities with clinging to reality: the reasoning of being separate from one and many, the reasoning of diamond slivers, the reasoning of being separate from existence and non-existence, the reasoning of preventing function, and the reasoning of great interdependence. Furthermore, there are three reasonings that negate permanence and annihilation, change and non-change, and the four extremes. The first is that this appearing meaning, the subject, should not be established as either entity or non-entity, because it is separate from one and many, like the moon in water. The way of separation is as previously stated. Moreover, there is no self-characteristic to be refuted, because no phenomenon has inherent existence. However, the imputation of existence onto non-existence is merely what is being negated here. As it is said in the Refutation of Disputes: "Since there is nothing to be refuted, I do not negate anything. Therefore, the imputation that you are negating is your own fabrication." So it is. The second is that the way things appear, the subject, should not be established as real, because it is separate from arising from self, other, both, and without cause, like a dream. Moreover, if sprouts arise from seeds, it is either from cause or without cause, but arising from both is not established because it contradicts substance, and by implication, arising from neither is also negated. If it arises from no cause, it would be too extreme, as it would follow that lotuses would arise from the sky. If it arises from existence, then arising from itself is not established, because the producer and the produced contradict in substance. If other arises from other, then darkness should arise from flames, because it is other. Even if it arises from a self-cause and other, it is not reasonable to arise from a permanent cause, because the cause does not change, so it is not established to produce the result. If it produces, then permanence is destroyed by changing. If it arises from impermanence, then it ceases in an instant, so the cause is not established, and therefore it is not possible for the result to arise. By negating contact, it is also not established to arise from a cause because there is no contact between cause and effect. Three
