This is because, just as when there are no ghosts, the power of ghosts is obstructed. From the Samadhiraja Sutra: Just as the moon rises in the clear sky, and its clear image also appears in the clear lake, the moon in the water is empty, accumulating but without substance. All dharmas should be known in the same way. Therefore, other-dependence is unreasonable, because it is produced by the previous moment, and changes in the second moment, and is the opposite of dependence, name, other-dependence, and the nature of dependent origination. The so-called "other's independence exists" also only seems to exist in name, but does not exist in reality. As previously stated: If analyzed thoroughly with wisdom, there is no examination, and no other-dependence. If the established thing does not exist, how can it be distinguished with wisdom? The eight consciousnesses cannot be both one and non-one, meaning that the eight consciousnesses cannot be the same entity, because in that case, the eyes can also hear sounds, and there will be no deaf or blind. Setting the mind consciousness as having discrimination and the five sense consciousnesses as non-discriminating is also unreasonable, and each position like the eyeball will become the place where the eight consciousnesses exist. Therefore, the eight consciousnesses cannot be one, nor can they be different. There are also three refutations of the Alaya consciousness: refuting permanence, refuting the object, and refuting the seed. That is, the Alaya consciousness of habit, which is the root of samsara, is to be refuted because it appears to exist when it does not. If one believes that the ultimate Alaya consciousness is real, it must also be refuted in order to dispel attachment. The first is that the continuous entity of momentary permanence is unreasonable, because there is no continuity at the same time, because there is no need for continuity, because there is no interruption. If it is not simultaneous, it cannot be continuous, because interruption and non-interruption are substantial contradictions, and the failure of momentary union also hinders this. Therefore, the continuity of moments is also not much, and the past continuity has been cut off, and the future continuity has not yet arisen. As the Two Truths says: Because the continuity of the aggregates is like the flame of a lamp. And, what is called continuity and collection is false like a rosary, an army, etc. Refuting the object is saying that the Alaya consciousness cannot focus on the vast container and sentient world. If the general meaning of the container and sentient world is appearance, then it is the manifestation of discrimination.

It will definitely change. If it appears as emptiness, then it becomes not directed towards the actual objects of the outer container and inner contents. If it appears as meaning with its own characteristics, then it would fall into the fault of being harmed by darkness and obscuration. If it only points to the outer container and inner contents, then it would fall into the fault of also pointing to its own retinue. There are three refutations of the seed: it is not reasonable for the ripened result to be either one or different. Refuting the division of habitual patterns. Refuting the potential. First, the part of the seed itself cannot be different from the ripened result, because it does not arise from the agent, so it would become without cause. And, since there are two substances of the all-ground consciousness, it would fall into the fault of having two continuums. It also cannot be one, because it is impossible for a part to be both the producer and the produced. Second, it is not possible for the divider and the divided to be simultaneous, because it would fall into the fault of the habitual patterns being divided into two parts. If they are not simultaneous, then it cannot be divided, because when the divided exists, the divider does not exist. The refutation of potential is: in general, it is impossible for anything to have potential for anything, because if the cause ceases, there will be no cause for arising, so the potential will not be established. And, it is impossible to arise from what has not ceased, because permanent things cannot exist, so the potential is negated. Therefore, even if it is called the all-ground consciousness in illusory appearances, it is like a dream, because it does not exist in things, so establishment is impossible. As it says in the Lankavatara Sutra: "There is no self-awareness, and there is no discrimination-awareness. There is no all-ground, and there is no thing. Evil children, thinkers, like corpses, should examine these." So it says. Defiled mind does not exist, because the object of focus, the all-ground consciousness, does not exist, and defilement does not exist, and the continuum of mind and the moment do not exist. It is also unreasonable for the main and retinue not to be mutually dependent, because it would fall into the fault that all objects of mind-consciousness are not dharmas. And, the all-ground consciousness would fall into the fault of not pointing to all outer containers and inner contents. And, for the omniscient wisdom, it would fall into the fault that present dharmas do not appear. Cessation also does not exist, because the objects to be refuted, the six consciousnesses, etc., are false, and the basis of refutation, suchness, does not exist. If suchness is truly established, then it does not exist in either nature or convention, because if it is one with appearance, then it would become impermanent. If it is not one, then there is nothing that is not pervaded by appearance, so it would fall into the fault of not abiding anywhere. The objects to be refuted, self and knowledge-dharma, are false, and the suchness of a pot would fall into the fault of becoming made.
