That which is merely appearance, the subject of debate, is merely the nature of the apprehender. Because it is clear and cognitive, like various feelings of pleasure and pain. Therefore, external reality is impossible; all phenomena are mental objects, impermanent and dependent on others, merely other-powered. And the imputed nature refers to clinging to that as self. Here, regarding their system of external reality, there are three distinctions: distinct appearances of consciousness, numerous appearances, and non-dual diversity. The first view is that some believe that the appearance of things like mountains is itself consciousness. However, because of clinging to the consciousness that appears as the apprehended aspect, and because it is a different substance from the external object, just as when a boiled egg dries, the yellow and white parts exist directly, the consciousness of blue appearance and blue apprehension exists directly in two parts. The second view is that some believe that just as one can distinguish many appearances, so too can consciousness, so the consciousness that knows five fingers exists as five realities, and it is impossible for two appearances to appear in one consciousness, and so on. The third view is that all appearances, such as blue, yellow, stable, and moving, appear in one consciousness, and they believe that its nature is real. Although it appears as many aggregates, they believe that it is merely an appearance of one consciousness. The refutation of these views is twofold: there is no proof, and there is harm. The first point is: the meaning of the sign "clear and cognitive" is the knowable, or merely the act of knowing? The statement "appearance is consciousness, because it is knowable" and "because it is merely knowable" is not established in its pervasiveness, because it may refer to an external object, so there is doubt about the reverse. Because it is simultaneous and unrelated, it cannot be known. Because it prevents being non-simultaneous and similar, it cannot be known. Therefore, it cannot be said that it is excluded on the inconsistent side, because even if that excludes the external object, it does not exclude the unreal object of apprehension, so it cannot be established as the nature of consciousness, just as excluding the image as the face does not establish it in the mirror. There are five harms: it is not reasonable to be mistaken or not mistaken, it is not reasonable to be one or many, it necessarily becomes the nature of consciousness, it necessarily becomes clear, and it is too extreme. The first point is: in the world, false objects, that is, unreal appearances, are considered to be mistaken, like the consciousness in a dream. The appearance of reality itself is considered not to be mistaken, like being awake or

It is like the consciousness holding a single clod of earth. Therefore, blue and other phenomena are not mind because they appear as objects. If there is no pervasion, is the appearance as an object an illusion or not? If it is not an illusion, then it cannot be mind, because all non-illusions hold the object as it is, therefore, the appearance of an object itself is true in reality. If it is an illusion, then it is not appropriate for it to be mind, because the appearance of an object is false, and what is false is non-existent, therefore, merely the thing itself is negated, so the thing of mind cannot exist. Even if merely the thing itself does not exist, it can still be the object of consciousness, just like saying, 'Don't take the clay pot, take the golden pot.' If you say that we have no illusion at all, because everything appears as the thing itself of consciousness. However, wandering in samsara because of clinging to objects is also not valid. If the appearance of something that does not exist as an object is not an illusion, then clinging to something that does not exist as an object will also not become an illusion, therefore, there would be the fault of the cessation of illusion. We do not determine whether something is an illusion or not by whether the thing appears or not, but by whether the way of holding it is in accordance with the object or not, that is also not reasonable. If things like pots exist in the way they appear, then they will become non-illusions, and if they do not exist, then non-existence itself cannot be the object of anything. It is not reasonable to establish one and different, because it is not reasonable for consciousness and form to be separately true, because without knowing the object, there is no characteristic of consciousness, and if consciousness comes out of the body, there will be the fault of causing death, and the mind will become something that can be seen with the eyes and measured with a scale, and mountains and trees etc. will in turn recognize themselves, because they recognize them themselves. If there is no pervasion, then the statement that mountains etc. are one's own consciousness will be lost. And there will be the fault of two consciousnesses existing in one continuum at the same time. That is also because each appearance of an object is considered to be consciousness, so there will also be the fault of countless consciousnesses existing in one continuum at the same time. If you admit it, that is impossible, because in the Pramāṇavārttika it says: 'Two conceptual thoughts do not arise simultaneously.' It is also not reasonable for the number of forms to be equal, because when the foot is seen, the hand is not seen, so the coarse appearance will be interrupted, and when the blue of the brocade is seen, the yellow is not seen, so the variegated appearance will be interrupted, and it is impossible for particles and other things to have no parts.
