If we consider it from the aspect of appearance, since the pot is not established, its form cannot be recalled. If consciousness is one with things and generalities that are non-things, it is too extreme. If they are not one, then it is contradictory for consciousness to recall, and since things and non-things are contradictory, it is not established. Secondly, it is not the form of the pot, because it is falsely attributed to the appearance of one's own consciousness there. It is also not established because the recollection of the pot is refuted. Thirdly, it is merely the presumption of conceptual thought, and it is impossible to recall that object itself. Because the past, future, and present objects are made into objects by the present consciousness, and because they are not related to the object, it will also become not a recollection of the object. The Four Hundred says: "Memory is called that which has passed away, and it turns upside down in relation to the object." Refuting non-associated formations has nine aspects: general refutation, refutation of attainment, refutation of similarity, refutation of the four dharmas, refutation of letters, refutation of entry, refutation of speed, refutation of object, and refutation of aggregation. Firstly, non-associated formations are not established as real even in conventional terms, because from form and so on, they are neither the same nor different. They are not the same, because impermanence would become form, and there would be no impermanence in the formless. It cannot be other, because the connection with form is not established, and it would become not a single entry point. Other reasons can also be applied. Refuting attainment has three aspects: agent and action, time, and examining what is to be attained. Firstly, in the case of vows and the like, the object to be attained and the attainer cannot be one, because it is impossible for one to have both agent and action. Secondly, when Devasbyin attains the pot, he cannot be attaining it at the time, because if he has already attained it, it has ceased, and if he has not attained it, it has not arisen. If he is attaining it at the time, then the meeting is not established, so it is refuted. Thirdly, a permanent pot cannot be the object to be attained, because permanence is not established as the object to be attained, and if it is attained, it will become impermanent. Impermanence cannot be the object to be attained, because it ceases when it is made the object to be attained. The Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds says: "Thus, in empty things, what is attained, what is lost?" Refuting similarity has three aspects: mutual dependence, uncertainty of similarity and dissimilarity, and the common factor not being established. Firstly, the pot and the woolen cloth do not have the same impermanence, because both are partless, so it is not established. Secondly, mis-

It is unreasonable to be like the sun but unlike darkness, because the similarity is only at the level of things, and upon analysis, this similarity does not hold. The third example is that saying blue bark and blue lotus are similar, only the general blue is similar, but the two similar properties do not hold. Since the two specific similar properties do not hold, the general blue also does not hold, because the mixture of coarse and fine causes it to not hold. The refutation of the four dharmas (birth, aging, abiding, and decay) is divided into two points: one is that they cannot become one, and the other is that they cannot each become permanent or impermanent. The first point is that birth is impossible from non-existence to existence, aging is the change from new to old, abiding is from birth to not yet destroyed, and decay is the change from existence to non-existence. These are all unreasonable, because the atom has not been established, and different actions are impossible. The existence of birth, aging, and abiding contradicts the action of decay. These three also transform into decay, so the forms are the same. Only in appearance, the difference is not established, and in things, the part is not established. The Root Wisdom Treatise says: Birth and the other three each, as the characteristics and actions of conditioned dharmas, cannot exist simultaneously in one time, in one thing. Therefore, for a momentary thing, these four cannot exist simultaneously. Since there is no other thing outside of the moment, if these four do not enter, then the commitment that all conditioned dharmas possess these four is a failure. Therefore, for any thing, although it appears that way in appearance, it is an illusion. In the nature of things, even birth, aging, abiding, and decay do not have a momentary part, so it is not established. The treatise says: When a thing is in the process of decay, birth cannot be established. If it is not in the process of decay, then it cannot be a thing. If all things at all times are the law of aging and death, then what is not aging and death, the permanent thing? Therefore, when analyzing the appearing things with this reasoning, one will instantly recognize the nature that is free from birth, aging, abiding, and decay, as vast as the sky. The meditation that abides in reality arises naturally, thereby completely destroying samsara. The Four Hundred Verses says: Even small wisdom will not have the slightest doubt about this dharma. Even if the slightest doubt arises, it will completely destroy samsara. It means that if one realizes, one can see.
