Because it is dust, and because the valley's width and narrowness do not affect the loudness of the sound. The second case is not allowed because it obstructs continuity and contact, and because sound cannot arise, and because it is unreasonable for the clarity of hearing to vary with the distance of the sound. Pleasantness or unpleasantness cannot be established, because it stops in an instant, so pleasantness or unpleasantness does not last. There is also no smell, taste, or touch, because contact is obstructed. Showing existence cannot be established, because parts and wholes cannot be shown individually, a whole without parts cannot be shown, and parts without a whole do not exist, because partless atoms cannot be established, and coarse things have parts. Since parts and wholes cannot be established separately, they cannot be shown together either. Also, because the past and future do not exist, and it is simultaneous with the present, it cannot be shown. Obstruction Having obstruction cannot be established. If there is obstruction without contact, then shooting an arrow from the east to the west mountain would also be obstructed. If there is contact, there is no obstruction if the contact is in the same place, but if the places are different, contact cannot be established. There is no non-distinct substance, because the many are pervaded by the distinct, and non-distinctness in the distinct cannot be established. The absence of the many is not found in either the subtle or the coarse, because partless atoms cannot be established, and coarse things have parts and are pervaded by the many. There is no ability to produce sound, because each of the atoms that cause it has no ability, and there is nothing other than those collections. Similarly, apply this to other forms and so on. There is no non-discriminating form, because it negates the virtuous, non-virtuous, and unspecified, and because it obstructs the continuity and momentary contact of those. There are three negations of mind: it cannot be self-aware or non-self-aware, it cannot be aware of objects or unaware of objects, and it cannot be found inside or outside the body. The first case is that the mind cannot be self-aware, because the knower and the known do not exist. Just as the fingertip cannot touch itself, and the sword cannot cut itself. The *Lankavatara Sutra* says: Just as a sword cannot cut a sword, and a finger cannot touch itself, similarly, the mind cannot see the mind. So it is said. Nor can it be non-self-aware, because happiness and so on are clear by one's own awareness. Awareness of objects is also not allowed, because having parts and not having parts

Because it is impossible to see, and if the object and consciousness are not simultaneous, the seeing becomes inverted, and if they are simultaneous, since there is no connection, it would be independent. An objectless consciousness is also not permissible, because the object to be known itself is without parts. If the knowing faculty, which is itself without parts, knows, then the two would be holding onto two parts, and also because contact is refuted by examination. An object that is not consciousness is also not permissible, because it is refuted by experiencing blue and so on. It cannot be found inside or outside the body, because the body has not become parts, so the mind's reliance is not established, and therefore dwelling there is not established. If the mind exists coarsely, it is refuted by examining it as having parts. Without parts, the dweller is not established, so dwelling in the body is not established. Since the body is not established, the mind's dwelling in the body is also not established. In the Commentary on the Bodhicitta, it says: "Neither inside, nor likewise outside, nor in any place between the two, the Victorious Ones have not found the mind." And in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life, it says: "The mind is not inside, nor outside, nor is it found elsewhere. It is not the body, nor is it elsewhere, it is not mixed, nor is it separately somewhere." So, what is the nature of mind as awareness? Just as the image appearing in a mirror cannot be found as the mirror itself or as something else, yet it appears, so too, the mind appears even though it does not exist, and is therefore an illusion. The appearances in the mind are even more so the cause of appearing as illusions. In the Sutra of the Meeting of Father and Son, it says: "Just as a mirror is very clear, and how it has no self-nature, so too, the appearance of images, the wise should understand all phenomena in this way." Is this sutra not spoken from the questioning of the tree? There is no contradiction, because in the past, different beings to be tamed, when listening to the teachings of the Bhagavan, each heard the names of the sutras according to their own inclinations. At one time, in one courtyard of the assembly, there were also the Sutra of the Meeting of Father and Son, the Sutra of the Tree's Question, the Sutra of the Immaculate, the Sutra of the Heap of Jewels, the Sutra of the King of Samadhi, and so on, each holding onto what they heard and then speaking about it elsewhere, so that is how it happened. That is also the place and the topic being the same and different, appearing to sentient beings in various ways, and the appearance of the earlier and later times, that is precisely the blessing of the Buddha, while dwelling in one place at one time, the place
