. First, there are three refutations: refutation of the nature of karma, refutation of the agent, and refutation of the ripening. First, karma itself does not exist as a substance, because the act of killing, etc., is neither the same as nor different from one's own body and mind. Second, there are two aspects to this. First, refute by considering the three categories of agents: Does the act of killing occur because the agent is a killer, or because the agent is not a killer? If it is because the agent is a killer, then the killer and the act of killing are contradictory as agent and object, and would become two separate entities. If it is because the agent is not a killer, then it is not valid, because if one is not a killer, then killing is contradictory. There is no killing by one who is both a killer and not a killer, nor by one who is neither a killer nor not a killer, because the two contradictory states cannot exist in one entity. Furthermore, if the time of killing is divided into three, killing is not accomplished in an indivisible moment. It is not valid to kill what has already been killed, because agent and object are contradictory. It is also not reasonable to kill what has not yet been killed, because when there is a killer in the present, the object to be killed has not yet arisen in the future, and therefore does not exist. In the present moment, one cannot be both the object to be killed and the agent of killing, because a moment is indivisible. It is also not valid to kill what is being killed, because the two aspects of agent and object are contradictory. There is no killing in progress other than what has been killed and what has not been killed, because they are contradictory. Subtle karma is not a real entity, so there would be no killing. Therefore, the act of killing is not accomplished. Refutation of ripening: For example, the ripening of killing a sheep is experiencing the suffering of hell. This cannot occur for a permanent agent, because if it were permanent, it would be impossible to change from the time of the action, so it would be impossible to experience the suffering of hell. If it were not permanent, then there would be no experience, because when one is born in hell, the sheep killer has already died, so it is not the same person as before. Nor does it arise from the continuous stream of moments, because a moment is indivisible, so continuity is not established. The karma established by continuity is not accomplished. As it is said, in the presence of the Dragon King: If karma had inherent existence, then undoubtedly it would become permanent. Karma would not become uncreated, because the permanent is uncreated. And it is said: If these dharmas do not come from the nature of dharma, and there is no coming or going, then how can karma and the ripening of karma be reasonable? There is no coming in the ultimate truth, and there is no going anywhere.

Thus, in the conventional truth, it is the path to enter, and it shows the ripening result. Thus, and so on. In the Garland of Precious Gems it says: In the ultimate truth, there is no karma, and there is no ripening of karma. Thus, and so on. Refuting that karma alone is the cause: If all suffering and happiness are only from past karma, then when a hunter kills a monkey, the hunter should not have any sin, because it is the monkey's own past karma. Also, when giving alms, the giver should not have merit, because it is the beggar's karma. In the Jataka tales it says: Past karma has done everything, but if you think like that, why is it that killing the monkey, I completely regard it as done by me? Thus, and so on. By this reasoning, it also refutes the view of our own school that only karma exists. Refuting past karma is divided into three: First, past time is not established; second, abilities are the same; third, karmic results are impossible. First, since there is no time that is not new, the so-called past karma, the old is not established. Because even at the beginning, it is the new karma of that time. If there is no beginning, then it is even more impossible to establish the old. Because there is no beginning, that is, there is no previous one, so how can the karma accumulated from the beginningless past be established? It is also impossible to establish it dependently, because if the present on which it depends is without parts, then the dependent dharma established by it is not established beforehand, so its karma is not established. Abilities are the same: The ripening of the sins accumulated in the past comes now, and the karma accumulated now comes later, so it does not come now, both of these are the same because they are produced from the cause. Therefore, it is also unreasonable for the fruits to ripen earlier or later. Karmic results are impossible: Past karma itself is also impossible to accumulate, because the benefits and harms done to others in the past are all past karma, so there is no end, and it cannot be established. And since the doer has not created anything new, the ripening does not occur. Thus, and so on. The teacher Nagarjuna said: The six teachers, such as those who speak of annihilationism, causelessness, no virtue, and those who speak of time and the fourteen matters, were all defeated by the Great Hero Shakyamuni. As it is said. The twenty peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates of destruction are: The five aggregates such as form are me, there is me in them, they arise from me, I have power over them, and so on, clinging to them as me.
