So, do you also want a specific time when miracles and other changes are great, and that's why you are the same? No, because when the Buddha previously displayed miracles, he blessed and subdued the demons and heretics, and those who followed later aimed at the Buddha, so it's not just the time. Moreover, because good deeds are valued for their changes, they are not the same. If Katyayana's son is asked if there is a next life, he answers yes, and is there not? Are there both? Are there neither? These are four. And, are self and world permanent? Impermanent? Are there both? Are there neither? These are four. Similarly, after the Tathagata passes away, do I still exist? Do I not exist? Are there both? Are there neither? These are four. Are body and life one? Are they separate? Are there both? Are there neither? If asked like this, it is not permissible to answer according to the question. If one temporarily admits permanence, the basis for examination is not established because coarse particles are indivisible. In terms of convention, momentary and other temporal changes negate it. Subtle objects do not have an established nature, so they cannot be permanent. If annihilation is examined, there is no basis, so there is no reason for annihilation. In terms of convention, it is negated because it appears as the object of each sense organ. Moreover, for things whose basis is not established, special qualities cannot exist, just like the sharpness and dullness of a rabbit's horn. Furthermore, if asked whether something like a pillar is permanent, the answer is permanent. If asked whether it is impermanent, the answer is impermanent, etc., which is not possible on that basis, just as it is not darkness when it is manifest. The son of the naked ascetic relative believes that everything is karma, because happiness arises from previous ascetic karma, and suffering arises here from previous bad karma. New karma has absolutely no power now. Whatever previous karma there was, it now manifests, so one experiences happiness and suffering. Therefore, one should strive to purify through asceticism and so on. If there is power now, then if a mute performs asceticism and so on, it will clearly become able to speak, which is impossible. Therefore, the defilements produced by previous karma gradually diminish, and in the end, not a single one remains, just like crops ripen. That's what they say. There are three refutations to this: generally refuting the self-nature of karma, refuting that only karma is the cause, and refuting previous karma.
