Therefore. As stated in the *Heap of Jewels Sutra*: 'Noble son, if you wish to quickly attain complete enlightenment, you should train in thoroughly seeking the perfection of listening.' So, how should one listen? That is, one should abandon all distractions and disturbances. From offering actual and mentally created offerings of the Dharma, prostrate respectfully, sit upright, join palms, and listen with an undistracted and respectful attitude. When listening to the Dharma, one should abandon all forms of distraction and disturbance. Distraction refers to worldly activities such as trade, which cause the three doors of body, speech, and mind to be distracted. Disturbance refers to gathering retinues and possessions, and being controlled by them, causing the three doors of body, speech, and mind to be busy, which is called disturbance and entanglement. In a place free from obstacles to the Dharma, arrange the seat for the speaker, invite him to sit on cushions of silk, etc., offer actual offerings such as incense, flowers, and lamps, and visualize offering clouds, whether owned or not owned by oneself, filling the expanse of the sky. Abandon one's own adornments such as umbrellas, staffs, weapons, head coverings, and shoes. Without looking back or sideways, sit in a half-lotus posture or squatting, with eyes lowered and palms joined. Listen without letting the mind wander from the Dharma, and listen with respect and joy towards the Dharma and the lama. As stated in the *Arya Ratnakuta Sutra*: 'Joy, respect, and supreme faith are the proximate cause, eliminating obscurations and afflictions, and transcending defilements. Entering for the benefit of beings, understanding the profound Prajnaparamita, one should listen to where the brave ones practice.' One should listen in this way. Conversely, one should not even for a moment think that this speaker does not know the Dharma, or is of low birth, or has meager resources, or has gross afflictions, or is angry, or is violent, or has unpleasant speech, or has poor clothing, or is poor and destitute, or has a bad retinue, etc. If such thoughts arise, one should confess and accumulate merit, remember his kindness, and generate the perception of the Buddha a hundred times. This is the samadhi of listening to the Dharma. That is, visualize oneself as Manjushri, visualize the rays of Dharma light entering one's heart, and listen to the Dharma.

If the listeners are male, visualize Manjushri, who is red-yellow, holding a sword and scripture on a lotus. If they are female, visualize Green Tara, holding a lotus. Visualize the rays of Dharma emanating from the speaker's mouth, striking each person's heart, dispelling the darkness of ignorance, and causing the lotus of the mind to bloom; this is the key instruction. Listening in this way is tasting the flavor of Dharma, which is the method for attaining Buddhahood. As stated in the 'Mother Tantra': 'Sons or daughters of good family should listen to the Dharma from holy individuals and attend to them with reverence. Having heard it, they should practice accordingly until they attain complete enlightenment.' At that time, listen with eighty-four aspects of listening, with joy and a respectful mind. When listening to the Dharma, be single-pointed, generating great joy and respect for the Dharma and the Guru, and listen with eighty-four qualities. Among these, great joy means that the mind is without the defilement of afflictions, listening single-pointedly with joy and happiness. Respect means that there is no idle chatter in the mouth, the body sits upright, palms are joined, and the face is smiling.
