One should listen. Six things to cherish, such as regarding as jewels; six difficult practices, such as enduring afflictions; six unchangeable things, such as much learning and diligence; six things to do on purpose, such as generating compassion; six kinds of needs, such as knowing the distinctions; six kinds of seeking, such as seeking the Dharma. Listen with thirty-six qualities. First, showing the six cherished intentions: In the Sutra Requested by Lagzang, it says: Regarding the Dharma-speaking guru as a treasure of jewels; regarding the Dharma as a wish-fulfilling jewel; regarding listening to the Dharma as extremely rare; regarding holding and contemplating the Dharma as having precious meaning; regarding individually discerning the Dharma as not finding it in hundreds of thousands of kalpas; regarding abandoning those who seek the Dharma as abandoning nectar and taking poison; those who listen and contemplate should cultivate the intention to become meaningful. Thus it is. Showing the endurance of six difficult practices: It says in that: In the direction of virtuous friends and the Dharma, endure the afflictions of heat and cold; endure the afflictions of hunger and thirst; endure the afflictions of bad words and noise; endure the afflictions of tiring work; endure the afflictions of giving up and seeking provisions; and even cherish life without hesitation and endure it, this is the most important. Thus it is. The armor of six unchangeable things: It says in that: When teaching the Dharma and diligently practicing the Dharma, strive without retreating even with a short spear. Accumulate much learning, hold much learning, know the meaning of the Dharma, and possess its practice, and also rely on such a person, and respectfully serve such a person. Thus it is. The six differences to be made on purpose: It says in that: One should know all the roots of virtue, and having known them, accomplish them properly, generate great compassion for sentient beings, uphold the sacred Dharma, not cut off the lineage of the Three Jewels, and ripen all sentient beings, one should be endowed with such actions. Thus it is. Accomplishing the six needs: In the Sutra Requested by Kashyapa, it says: After listening, knowing the distinctions of the Dharma,

The necessity of doing things, and the necessity of knowing and not doing things that should not be done, and the necessity of showing it to others as well, and the necessity of oneself and others attaining liberation by showing it that way, and the necessity of oneself and others cultivating wisdom, and the necessity of cutting off the doubts of those who come from all four directions, like this, one should strive to listen with six necessities. The six seekings are: From the Sutra of the Greatly Extensive Buddha Avatamsaka, it says, without deceit and pretense, seek the Dharma from the depths of your heart, seek not for your own sake but for the sake of benefiting all beings, seek not desiring gain and respect, but desiring to abandon the afflictions of beings, seek without partiality, but with the entry of wisdom, seek without doubt, in order to cut off the doubts of all beings, seek without arrogance and desire, in order to perfect the Buddha's teachings, like this, seek with such complete seeking. When should such a vessel listen? Dharma. The time to listen is when it becomes an antidote. One should seek the advice given at the appropriate time. That is also when it becomes an antidote to one's own afflictions, listening to that Dharma is the time to deeply integrate into one's own mindstream. And the desire to seek meaning, and when one is young, etc., is the time to listen to a place as vast as the ocean. When naturally entering the teachings, one must listen at the beginning, because one knows the faults and merits of samsara and nirvana, and thus enters into acceptance and rejection. When taming one's own mindstream, one must listen, because one dispels confusion about anything. When continuously practicing, one must also listen, because one enhances the merits of virtuous deeds, etc. When all knowable mindstreams are liberated, one must also listen, because one cuts off the proliferation of doubts. Therefore, now from the beginning of entering the path to the final completion, it is very important to listen to the Dharma from someone more superior than oneself, because one can turn one's mind to the practices of the former great masters, and one's own realization can be improved. At first, being satisfied with this, clinging to any one thing and practicing in seclusion, one will not succeed in the end, and will not perceive the deviation and error of the path. To others, it may seem that one is practicing the Dharma, but one has no increase in oneself.
