Eleventh, Explanation of the Chapter on the Dharma of the Listener Disciple. Eleventh, Explanation of the Chapter on the Dharma of the Listener Disciple. Thus, after indicating the object from which one should listen, next explaining the very basis for holding what is heard. Therefore, the Dharma aspect of the listener disciple is: Abandon all faults, and listen with reverence. When listening to the Dharma, one should listen in a manner that is free from the three faults of a vessel, the six stains, and the accumulation of thirty-six faults. The three faults are: a vessel turned upside down, a vessel with a hole in the bottom, and a vessel like a poisonous substance. That is, just as not a single drop of nectar rain will enter a vessel turned upside down, one does not listen to the Dharma, or even if one listens, one becomes drowsy, engages in play and amusement, and one's mind is distracted elsewhere. Just as all the water that accumulates from the rain while a vessel with a hole in the bottom is on the ground will leak out, even if one remembers hearing the Dharma once at that time, one forgets it because one has not repeatedly familiarized oneself with mindfulness. Just as a poisonous substance filled with rainwater remains without being poured out, but anyone who uses it will not be comfortable, one becomes controlled by afflictions and instead becomes arrogant from hearing. Therefore, the advice is to abandon these three faults, as stated in the Middle Mother Sutra: "Listen well, keep it in mind, and I will tell you." This means to listen well without afflictions, to listen without turning the mouth downwards, and to keep it in mind without making a hole in the bottom. The six stains are as stated in the Treatise on Discrimination: "Pride and disbelief, not seeking profound meaning, outward scattering and inward dullness, and weariness are all stains." The thirty-six faults are: the six works of demons such as disrespect, the six works of obscurations such as pride, the six works of abandoning the Dharma such as pretense, the six faults of distraction such as seeking gain, the six faults of wrong views such as attachment to gain and honor, and the six paths of deviation such as alteration. Abandon the thirty-six faults and listen. Among these, the six works of demons are as stated in the Sutra of Complete Qualities: laziness, idleness, disbelief in the Dharma and those who speak it, not serving virtuous friends, not keeping the teachings in mind, and this world...

It means to despise karma and the ripening of karma with the mind. The six obscuring karmas are: In the Sutra Requested by Blo Gros Gya Tsho, it says, due to a demon entering one's own continuum, one becomes arrogant; due to the obscuration of karma, one abandons the Dharma; due to revealing the secret words of archery, one listens to the near teachings; one does not listen to the Bodhisattva Pitaka; one has wrong views about virtuous friends; and one has wrong views about the Dharma. The six causes of abandoning the Dharma are: In the same sutra, it says, due to desiring sins, one pretends to be virtuous in body and mind; due to arrogance, one does not respect those who speak the Dharma; due to doubt, one does not respect the Dharma; due to pretense, one lives a wrong livelihood; one does not respect parents, Khenpos, and Acharyas; and due to being rough in body and mind, one constantly argues disagreeably. The six faults of being distracted from the Dharma are: In the same sutra, it says, worldly activities are numerous; material gains are numerous; the exchange of joking words is numerous; close friends who are evil companions are numerous; wrong thoughts are numerous; and due to the power of bad karma, diseases and demonic obstacles are numerous. The six faults of being perverted are: In the Sutra Requested by Yul Khor Kyong, it says, one does not repay kindness but is deceitful; one practices Dharma out of attachment to gain and respect; one is jealous and stingy of others' gains; one does not think of the qualities of those who speak the Dharma but seeks faults; one believes in and relies on evil teachers; and one seeks debate but does not seek the merits of virtue. The six dharmas that deviate from the Great Vehicle are: In the Manjushri Emanation Sutra, it says, one does not seek the Bodhisattva Pitaka but seeks the magic of non-Buddhists; one engages in worldly affairs but does not seek extensive learning; one seeks the hearing of words but does not seek liberation from them; one seeks the Hearer and Solitary Realizer Pitaka but does not seek the Bodhisattva Pitaka; one does not manifest skillful means but seeks the exhaustion of afflictions; and one desires to be skilled in the fields of knowledge but does not seek virtuous friends. One should abandon such faults and listen. Then, with what kind of qualities should one listen? Entering into listening to the Dharma, any time is a good way.
