One should not engage in arguing or the like, nor be disrespectful, nor engage in any careless behavior, not even a little. Because the holy ones are upright and impartial, as soon as they see the conduct of others that is not in accordance with the Dharma, they will immediately feel displeased, thinking that it is not so, and thus their minds will be upset, and the initial connection will be broken. Even if the situation changes later for ordinary people, one should first learn to please them with great respect. The Ornament of Trees Sutra states: "You should not be weary of seeking a spiritual friend. Having found one, you should serve them without forgetting to practice their teachings. You should not be weary of any burden, and you should cultivate the perception of being like the earth. You should listen to whatever they instruct, and you should cultivate the perception of being like a servant." Furthermore, in seeking the conduct of enlightenment, seeking a spiritual friend is the method for that. Therefore, one should widely ask others where the spiritual friend resides, and one should also personally go to different places to investigate. No matter what difficulties arise, one should not turn back, and by seeking in this way, one accumulates the ocean of merit and wisdom, and is saved from the side of sin and non-virtue. The Moon Lamp Sutra states: "Those who wish to quickly attain unsurpassed enlightenment should generate the mind of enlightenment from great compassion, initiate diligence, and without regard for body and life, continuously seek the spiritual friend who teaches the sacred Dharma, and serve them with sincerity and without deceit. By seeking and serving in this way, without ever being weary, one will obtain the Dharma of manifesting enlightenment in bliss." The Sutra Requested by Akṣayamati also states: "For the sake of seeking a spiritual friend, one should not spare even body and life. One should not grasp at various objects, and one should not be attached to wealth. One should not desire gain and honor. One should abandon all of that and seek. Furthermore, not regarding body and life, not seeking worldly enjoyments, realizing that all dharmas are emptiness, having firm aspirations for all-knowingness, observing the nature of the realm of Dharma, desiring to transcend all existence, relying on the sky of the realm of Dharma that has no place to dwell, accomplishing the aspirations of all bodhisattvas, and the...

Purifying all fields, the wisdom of the Bodhisattva is unobstructed, diligently practicing, reverently serving the Guru, and completely seeking him. Furthermore, as it is said in the *Arrayed Trunk Sutra*: "Those Bodhisattvas who are completely held by virtuous friends will not fall into evil destinies, will not comprehend improper actions, will turn away from places of carelessness, will be liberated from the city of Samsara, will not act contrary to the Bodhisattva's precepts, will be manifestly superior to all the world, and will be difficult to be overcome by karma and afflictions. Sons of good family, therefore, you should constantly keep this in mind and go to the virtuous friends." Furthermore, as it is said in the *Four Dharmas Sutra*: "Monks, Bodhisattvas will not abandon virtuous friends even for the sake of their lives." Furthermore, as it is said in the *Bodhisattva Pratimoksha Sutra*: "There is no such thing as a precious thing that is not given up out of respect for the Khenpo and Acharya, or not serving with one's body, or not sending them off with one's feet, or not being pleased with verbal service." Furthermore, as it is said in the *Ratnakuta Sutra*: "When the Bhagavan was accumulating merit for countless three great asamkhyeya kalpas, in order to seek a virtuous friend who would teach the six-syllable mantra (Tibetan: གསུང་རྡོ་རྗེ་འབྲུ་དྲུག་, Sanskrit Devanagari: , Sanskrit Romanization: , Literal Chinese Meaning: ), he went to all the worlds until his ankles were worn away." Furthermore, as it is said in the *Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita Sutra*: "The liberation of the noble Sadaprarudita," and as it is said in the *Arrayed Trunk Sutra*: "The liberation of Norzang," and as it is said in the *Damamuka Sutra*: "The king offered a thousand butter lamps on his own body for the sake of the Dharma," and so forth. One should remember the many hardships that were practiced, and think, "Why am I not seeking?" One should think in this way and seek a true Guru. If he possesses the qualities described in the scriptures, even if there are one or more faults in terms of worldly lineage, possessions, or personality, one should rely on him. In particular, a virtuous friend is without hypocrisy and deceit, and what he thinks in his mind and what he says with his mouth are in harmony. Because he has a deep foundation, he may appear difficult to get along with, so one must rely on him with patience and endurance. As it is said in the *Gongdu Sutra*: "Although possessing worldly faults, he is a master of the path, a skilled guide."
