Such a noble Lama should be respectfully relied upon. It is also said in the Condensed Intentions (Gongpa Düpa): Therefore, Lord of Lanka, the wise, with joy and reverence, should thrice respectfully aspire to all who have become sacred, and touch their feet with their heads. Sixth, because the teacher is the most supreme and there is no other, one should rely on him. Especially in this degenerate age, there will be no other teacher for me than the loving Lama. Therefore, rely on him with greater reverence than a king. In the past, when the Buddha lived, in a time purer than now, the Buddha himself appeared as a teacher and accomplished deeds. Nowadays, the times are very degenerate, with the degeneration of lifespan, wealth, Dharma, and guides. In this age, there is no one other than the true Lama, the virtuous friend, who can truly teach the Dharma and benefit beings. Therefore, one should rely on him with greater reverence than the Buddha. Moreover, considering that the Lama and the Buddha are equal in terms of their nature of being naturally pure, accomplishing deeds, and the greatness of their activities, it can even be said that the Lama is more kind to us. In the Root Tantra of the Secret Assembly (Guhyasamāja Tantra) it says: Because of the equality of elements, activities, and nature, the Lama is equal to all Buddhas. Because he shows the path to beings, he is superior to the Buddhas themselves. It also says: The Lama is equal to all Buddhas, the Lama is superior to all Buddhas, he is the treasure of supreme qualities, I prostrate to the glorious Lama. Furthermore, in the past, when the Buddha tamed beings, he appeared as the Buddha and accomplished deeds. Then, when he appeared as Arhats and Panditas and accomplished deeds, he emanated as them to compile the scriptures and compose treatises. Nowadays, he emanates as virtuous friends to uphold the teachings and guide the path to liberation. In the Sutra of the Great Drum (Mahābherīsūtra) and the Sutra of the Parinirvana (Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra): Do not grieve, Ananda; do not lament, Ananda. In the future, I will emanate as virtuous friends to benefit you and others. In short, all qualities come from the Lama, and he has established the great and excellent path, so rely on the Lama. In the Flower Ornament Sutra (Avataṃsaka Sūtra) it says: The virtuous friend is the Budd

Like being born into royalty, like the eldest son of a Chakravartin king. Like a mother, increasing qualities. Like a father, accomplishing vast benefit. Like a grandmother, protecting from sin. Like a teacher, teaching all the trainings. Like a boatman, leading to the other shore. Like a doctor, healing the disease of afflictions. Like a hero, protecting from fear. Like a ferryman, liberating from the river of samsara. In short, all the actions of a Bodhisattva depend on a spiritual friend. Our teacher, the Bhagavan Buddha Shakyamuni, also attained Buddhahood by relying on a Guru. Therefore, one should always rely on a Guru. In the Gongdü it says: "Without relying on teachers, Buddhas will never arise. I have never seen one arise, and if one did, it would contradict the holy teachings." And in the Chakrasamvara Tantra it says: "Therefore, the root of all dharmas is said to be the Guru Vajradhara. Without arising from the Guru, there is no possibility of attaining accomplishment. Without arising from the Guru, there is no such thing as a Buddha. The rudder of samsara turns upwards, the Guru with qualities can transform it." Therefore, there are these and countless other reasons. To speak of them extensively, even in an eon, would not exhaust them. Therefore, from the first practitioner until attaining Buddhahood, one should always learn to rely on the Guru with reverence, without weariness. In the Arya Gandavyuha Sutra it says: "The qualities and praises of a spiritual friend, to speak of them extensively, even in an eon, would not exhaust them, therefore one should always rely on a spiritual friend." Having seen the reasons for relying in this way, one engages in reliance. The advice for seeking for the sake of reliance is: The glorious and holy Guru, in whatever land they reside, go to that land. Possessing great faith, respect, and service, from the very beginning, seek to please them. Go to the land where those holy Gurus, who possess the qualities mentioned earlier, reside. With faith, respect, and service of body, speech, and mind, from the very first meeting, one should please the Guru's mind, without thinking, 'What is this person like?' etc.
