Here: However difficult it is to endure, everything, everything must be endured. Thus it is said. Having found a truly excellent spiritual friend, one should attend to them without weariness. To accomplish great things, one should draw near with great patience and respect. Thus, the truly excellent lamas, when discerning the order of vessels, first examine and investigate. That is to say, to those who are miserly, they show a great desire for possessions; and to those who are not generous, they also show a need for possessions as a part of perfecting the two accumulations. Likewise, to those who are impatient, they speak unpleasant words; and to those who consider themselves poor in resources and narrow-minded, they show that they are accomplishing many tasks and doing so for a long time. In short, although the nature of the lama's body, speech, and mind is without confusion or falsehood, they continuously show various contradictions on the surface, so that (the disciple) thinks that the lama's body and speech are unrelated without examination, and the mind seems confused, thereby discerning whether the other person's faith is firm or not. That is to say, the excellent lamas who have profound wisdom are never fathomed by others. Although they constantly perform various actions, it is only to tame beings. Their intention does not go beyond the profound nature of reality, emptiness, and the mind of enlightenment. Therefore, whatever the lama's actions may be, one should understand them as the play of great intention, and thereby generate pure perception. One should not entertain even a little bit of disbelief, for that would disrupt the interdependent connections of the path. Whether the lama's actions are peaceful or wrathful, accomplishing benefit for others is the nature of excellent individuals, for this is the time when they have already accomplished their own benefit and are manifesting benefit for others. Therefore, to accomplish the great matter of liberation, there is no other way than the guide, the lama. Whatever difficult things the lama does, one must endure and accomplish them with patience, just as worldly affairs must also be accomplished by enduring difficulties. When seeking the path of liberation and attending to a lama, there are many unfavorable conditions. When aversion, turning away, and many thoughts arise, one should recognize them as the work of demons, and then again with great respect, attend to the lama as one would cherish a jewel that has been found. Whenever an excellent lama is found, evil demons strive to create obstacles, making every effort to separate the teacher and disciple.

Creating discord among them, making food, lodging, and harmonious conditions difficult, causing many obstacles when traveling the path, and generating discouragement due to the fear of immediate harm, and by having wrong views about the Lama and Dharma, allowing many thoughts of turning away to arise. Recognizing this as a demonic force that obstructs one's own liberation, one should abandon it. Again, one should rely on the Lama with great respect. As it is said in the Intermediate Mother (Yum Barma): "Just as a precious jewel is cherished with diligence and joy because it has many enemies, so too, when seeking the precious jewel of the Perfection of Wisdom, the evil demons will strive to create obstacles, striving in every way to prevent you from hearing it. Wherever you might be separated from a virtuous friend, they will inflict various harms to turn your mind away. At that time, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva will think: 'The evil demons are obstructing the side of virtue, and in every way, I must not let them have their way, I must do this.' Then, one should fully don the great armor." Furthermore, one should contemplate the kindness of the Lama, the guide to liberation, and thereby please him. Just as clear water clarifies from muddy water, An image appears, like a flawless jewel free from turbidity. The water of obscuration clears, revealing the image of qualities. Like gold in ore and precious treasures underground, And the Sugata dwelling within the lotus. It reveals the pure realm of the pervasive lord, the essence of Bodhichitta. Like light in the darkness of night. Like a guide who goes near to the island of liberation. One travels to the source of the deep water treasury. Therefore, one should rely on the holy ones. How should one rely on them? As it is said in the Sutra of the Arrayed Tree: With a mind like the earth, which does not tire of bearing all burdens; with a mind like a vajra, which cannot be split by discord; with a mind like a surrounding mountain range, which is not moved by suffering; with a mind like a servant, who does all that is commanded; with a mind like a sweeper, who has completely abandoned the pride of greatness; with a mind like an elephant, who can bear heavy burdens; with a mind like a dog, who does not get angry with its master; with a mind like a boat, which does not tire of going back and forth.
