One will completely abandon all lands. One will attain perfect leisure and endowments, and should rely on the teacher with the attitude of generating the perception of the teacher as the Buddha. Furthermore, one is advised to rely on the teacher by contemplating various examples: By the examples of asceticism, an army, a hero, a king, a teacher, a doctor, a benefactor, and a friend, one should strive to rely on a virtuous spiritual friend. By that, happiness and well-being will be achieved in this life and the next, and the Dharma will be accomplished. The instruction on relying on the teacher with constant diligence, cherishing, and reverence is as follows: If non-Buddhists exert great effort even in meaningless ascetic practices such as relying on the five fires, why should I not generate reverence and service towards the Lama who leads me from happiness to happiness in a meaningful way? If worldly people honor and offer to lords and masters for the sake of military assistance, why should I not make offerings to the Lama who saves me from all the suffering of samsara? If those who are frightened by temporary fears rely on heroes, why should I not rely on the Lama who liberates me from eternal samsara and the lower realms? If even kings are offered precious jewels, musical instruments, and umbrellas, why should I not generate reverence and service towards the Lama who bestows upon me the great benefit of lasting importance? If even teachers who teach worldly knowledge such as crafts are served and honored, why should I not generate reverence and service towards the Lama who teaches sentient beings how to attain Buddhahood? If even doctors who balance imbalances are offered to, why should I not generate reverence and service towards the Lama who removes the chronic disease of the five poisons? If even ferrymen who save one from daily fears are cherished and offered to, why should I not generate reverence and service towards the Lama who saves me from the enemies of the four maras? If one is willing to give up one's life for those who provide even a little help with food, clothing, and wealth, why should I not generate reverence and service towards the Lama who bestows the wish-fulfilling jewel? If even friends who associate with one for a short time are offered to with joy, why should I not generate reverence and service towards the Lama who introduces me to my own nature, the supreme and profound Dharma, the ultimate friend?

If one cherishes and diligently fulfills even the desires of this life, why would one not have faith and serve the Lama who fulfills the wishes for lasting happiness? Thinking in this way, one should rejoice in relying on the Lama, and by studying many examples and categories, one should generate faith and service. By doing so, one will obtain the great qualities of cause and effect, be praised and honored by others, have a long life, be free from illness, increase wealth, fulfill all desires, live happily, be protected from the fears of the bardo, and in the future, be reborn in a pure land where the Buddha dwells, being born miraculously on a lotus, and ultimately attain enlightenment. Thinking in this way, one should please the Lama's body, speech, and mind as much as possible. One should please the Lama with whatever one possesses, without being miserly. Because the qualities of the Dharma are immeasurable, one will complete the accumulations, pacify obstacles, possess wealth, and quickly attain the peaceful state of enlightenment. One should offer one's possessions without stinginess, not only to please the Lama, but also to praise the Lama's qualities in front of others and encourage them to make offerings as well. That is, as soon as one knows what the Lama likes, one should offer it immediately without hesitation. If there are two choices, one should offer the best one to the Lama. By offering possessions to the Lama as a token of gratitude and for the sake of the Dharma, one will accumulate a vast collection of merits. The merit of even a single word of the Dharma cannot be repaid even by serving for an eon, let alone the kindness of the Lama. In the Sutra Requested by the Fierce Householder, it says: 'Any Bodhisattva who diligently practices the six paramitas or the accumulations of the Bodhisattva path in order to receive and recite the Dharma, if they receive or obtain a single verse from a teacher, even if they serve that teacher with material gain, respect, and all offerings for as many eons as there are letters in the verse, they still cannot fully repay the teacher's kindness, let alone the kindness of the Dharma.' The benefits are immeasurable. In the Inconceivable Secret Sutra, it says: 'Sons or daughters of good families should serve the Lama with great reverence. By doing so, the intention arising from virtuous actions will be virtuous, and therefore the actions will become virtuous.'
