The very nature of all accomplishments. If one pleases the Lama with scents such as sandalwood or camphor, then in hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas, in hundreds of thousands of Buddha-fields, the merit is superior to offerings. Superior to adorning countless Buddha and Bodhisattva images with the five precious substances, adorning a single hair or body hair of the Lama with the five precious substances, this is limitless merit. Just as offering a feast seven times to sixty-two million fully ordained monks, is not comparable to offering seven grains of rice to the Lama's mouth; the merit of seven grains cannot be matched by hundreds of thousands of millions. Thus, thinking about the benefits of offering to the Lama, offer and serve with body and possessions. Do not boast about offering a small amount of material to the Lama, nor should you count it, nor should you regret it. This is the means to accomplish great things in this life and the next, so offer with all good things and always serve. In the world with gods, there is no place of virtue greater than the Lama, nor is there anyone more kind, so do not boast about offering a small amount of worldly wealth, do not count it, do not be ungrateful, because its merit is immeasurable. Inferior people directly seek repayment in front of the Lama, but secretly proclaim to others again and again, "I have offered this," and at other times regret arises, so do not do that. The Sutra says, "If good deeds are counted, they are exhausted; if regret arises, they are exhausted." Furthermore, the Lama dispels the decline of samsara and obtains the wealth of the Buddha, showing the supreme precious Dharma, and introducing the nature of mind as Buddha. It is not appropriate to seek repayment for his small amount of material possessions, but only to offer to increase one's own merit. If the receiver is as kind as a mountain, and has not demanded offerings, how can there be talk of repayment? Therefore, thinking about the kindness, to accomplish happiness in this life and the next, and to accumulate provisions for the path, offer the Lama with all the good things you have, and strive to serve him without weariness. As it says in the Ornament of Trees Sutra: Lineage.

Son, you should strive to serve your virtuous spiritual friend with gratitude. Why? Because all virtuous qualities are in his hands. As it says in "Immaculate Wisdom": Whoever makes offerings and serves the treasure-holding lama, it cannot be fully spoken or counted. If someone does that, it will be fruitless and will be destroyed. After pleasing the guru with external objects, one should also please him with the excellent conduct of reverent three doors. With the body, prostrations, circumambulations, and offerings are made. Protect from obstacles, send messages, provide service, rise, spread mats, and perform various kinds of reverence. Serving the guru in this way is threefold: the lowest is offering material goods, the intermediate is employing body and speech, and the highest is pleasing through practice. Material goods only accomplish the happiness of worldly people and are easy to give up. Therefore, employing body and speech is superior, for in this world, life is considered the most precious, and being able to give up body and life without hesitation is extremely difficult. Therefore, making practice the essence is supreme, for that is the necessity of relying on the guru, that is the conduct of the former ones, and that is where the necessity of the path culminates. Moreover, even being able to give up body and life, it is extremely rare to be able to accomplish practice. Here, the first of pleasing with the three doors is the body, which is divided into what should be done and what should be abandoned. What should be done, which is pleasing, is to serve and attend with unwavering faith and reverence, aiming for liberation. Employing one's own body towards the guru, prostrations and circumambulations are performed, and external offerings such as incense, flowers, and lamps, as well as internal offerings such as essence and flesh, and secret offerings such as realization, samadhi, and wisdom, are offered both during the guru's lifetime and after his passing. On the anniversary of the day the guru passed away, offerings are made, and generosity is practiced towards others, remembering the guru's kindness with reverence. Protect the guru from the dangers of fire, water, cliffs, wild animals, or enemies, send messages for the guru's affairs in different places, and provide whatever immediate services are needed.
