In the presence of the (Guru), one should avoid actions such as spitting, blowing the nose, vomiting, and urinating or defecating. One should not use the same place as a toilet. One should avoid stepping on the shadow of the Guru's body. Without permission, one should not walk in front of the Guru, nor from the right side, nor follow behind stepping on the Guru's footprints. The right side is the front of the line, so it is forbidden to walk from there. The front is the beginning of the walk, so it is forbidden to walk from the front. The back will cause the fault of stepping on footprints, so it is forbidden to walk from the back; one can walk from the left. If permission is granted, there is no fault at all, so one should ask for permission when walking. Without permission, one should not use the Guru's shoes, clothes, seat, other belongings, vehicle, room, tableware, bowls, books, and so on. One should not measure the Guru's body with sticks of different lengths or with the hand span, nor compare it with objects such as pillars, saying "It's the same as this," or measure by comparing one's own arm with the Guru's arm. If the Guru is regarded as a Buddha, then the crown of the Buddha's head is invisible, so measuring the Buddha's body will bring faults, as stated in the *Ratnakuta Sutra*. One should avoid stepping over the Guru's clothes and seat. In the presence of the Guru, one should not sit cross-legged in an arrogant manner, nor sit stiffly in a conceited manner. When consuming food and other items, one should not fail to offer the first portion (to the Guru), etc. If one does not know that these are various faults, one will become accustomed to them. Even if one knows, if one is disrespectful due to arrogance, it will be a million times heavier than the previous faults, so it should be avoided. First, one should examine and then rely on a Guru. From the time of reliance onwards, even if the Guru's behavior is bad, one should still respect him as a holy Guru. As stated in the *Gongdu Sutra*: "The Guru should be highly respected, even if he is not a true saint, he should be revered like the supreme one. If one despises and slanders him, one will fall into the lower realms and suffer torment." Therefore, one should think of the Guru's qualities and respect him, so that one can obtain immeasurable benefits. Even if an ordinary person is regarded as a Guru, he should be respected. For holy Gurus, one should not be casual like an old friend, but should always respect and serve them like a newly acquainted friend. Here, too, one should understand through scriptural authority that disrespectful behavior itself becomes an obstacle.

Furthermore, it is said in the Tantra of the Noble Yogini: 'If one steps on headrests and the like, one will climb Mount Shalma. If one measures the guru's body with height, that person will be pierced by three hundred short spears.' Also, it is said in the Secret Tantra of the Dakini: 'Do not come from behind the guru, do not step on the guru's footprints, do not walk in front of the guru. If others look back with shame, one will go to the work of slander and sin. Do not walk on the right side of the guru. Only those who like to follow the crowd walk on the left side that the guru elevates.' Also, it is said in the Crown-Jewel-Turning-Wheel: 'For the guru who shows the meaning of truth, if one steps on the shadow of his head, one will abandon the right path and fall into hell.' One should contemplate these words and, with the caution of a new bride just arrived, abandon impure conduct and treat the guru with respect. Just as with the body, there are things to be taken and abandoned with speech. Now, with a respectful attitude, I advise on the speech that should be practiced: With pleasant speech, praise and take refuge. With gentle and pleasant words, use honorifics and service. Act according to the guru's words and say, 'Everything is as you say.' Also, tell others about the guru's qualities, and pray with a melodious voice and faith. With utmost respect, learn from all aspects, and with speech, praise the guru, take refuge in the guru, and use honorifics for everything related to the guru. Whether openly or secretly, speak of the preciousness of the guru's words, remember the key points of the guru's words, do not forget and proclaim them—this is the service of speech. If the guru's words are slightly flawed, think: 'I have not fully understood the meaning of this. This statement seems contradictory, but it is just a problem with my own understanding.' Even if there is a mistake in the guru's Dharma or worldly speech, one should think that one has not understood it oneself. If asking others, one should answer, 'I have not understood the meaning of this insightful person.' Do not say or think of the guru's faults, not even for a moment, because this is a greater sin than slandering the Buddha's teachings. Therefore, do as the guru says, and even if something seems wrong, first guide the guru to speak his mind, and after starting, discuss the pros and cons and the good and bad, so that you can understand the guru's intention.
