Furthermore, the collection of numerous branches and limbs is called the body, and being separated and leaving remnants is also called the body. Although the gods have no remnants left, they are also called the body from the aspect of being separated from it. What is it that body, meaning, and realm appear separately? Or, is it enough for everything to appear as the realm? Or, is it enough for meaning and body to appear alone? If you think so, it is not right. To establish the rationality of appearing separately. Thus, on the basis of the Alaya, there are three habitual tendencies. Established from beginningless time, and accustomed to it. Therefore, it appears that way in all lifetimes. Because the Alaya has three different habitual tendencies, three appearances will also arise in the way of appearing, just like different sprouts from three different seeds. Wherever it arises, as long as the habitual tendencies are not exhausted, it will appear that way, just like the body, mind, and realm in a dream appear. The difference in previous habitual tendencies is that the beginningless habitual tendencies generate the previous lifetimes, and because of the habit of its continuation, this life is generated, just as daytime generates dreams. From the continuation of the habitual tendencies of this life, the body, meaning, and realm of the future will appear. These principles are stated in the Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutras: "Three kinds of three kinds of appearances." It means that because three kinds of habitual tendencies are established on the Alaya, three different appearances will appear, as taught by Lord Maitreya. Now, for those who are far from the eye of much learning and far from the path of the supreme Great Vehicle, to refute their wrong views. Ignorant people all say that everything is mind, and are very ignorant of the meaning of the three appearances, with many faults, confusing each other, and going too far. Abandon the bad sects of those who promote them. Those who do not understand the path of the Great Vehicle arrogantly say that all phenomena, samsara, nirvana, inner and outer, vessel and essence are their own minds, which seems to be deceiving many people. Thus, they also do not understand the meaning of the three appearances spoken of in the Great Vehicle scriptures. The habitual tendencies established in the mind are mind, but how can the habitual tendencies established in the body and realm be mind? If so, there are too many faults. The body and appearance can be seen with the eyes and are established as tangible forms, so will the mind also become like that? Or, like the mind, can the body and realm not be seen or heard?

It will become feasible, and the mind will have colors and shapes, as well as sights and sounds, etc. When one becomes a Buddha or falls into a lower realm, all appearances will become like that for him. Many appearances, one object, will become one consciousness. When appearances are destroyed, the mind will become like that. Earth, water, fire, and wind will become sentient beings, so it is reasonable to belong to the side of the materialist heretics. Confusing each other, just as one's own object is awareness, the material object also becomes self-awareness, and one's own mind will become outside, because the appearance resides outside. The appearance will become inside oneself, because the mind is clear and aware inside. The object of appearance is outside, and self-awareness is inside, it is unreasonable for the two to appear as different, because one entity does not have two parts. It is too extreme, from the time one is not born, one's own mind becomes established in this place. Because this appearance exists in this place from the time one is not born, and when one dies, the appearance of this place, the land, etc., will also become non-existent, etc. When one goes to another place, this appearance will also be transferred there, because this is one's own mind, and the mind will follow oneself to go and come. Or when one goes to another place, one's own mind will remain in this place, because this appearance remains. These and other categories of faults are very numerous, therefore one should abandon the bad tenets of those who are foolish and without learning, like cowherds. Whatever appears is of such a nature. Saying, "O sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind," and also saying, "The mind disturbed by habitual tendencies, appears greatly in objects." Etc., is it not the mind? Answer: That is from the perspective that appearance and the object of appearance are different, appearance is mind, it should be understood in this way, grasping appearance as non-appearance is one's own mind. Saying that appearance is mind is intended to prevent the Hinayana and other schools from grasping external paths as true, not to say that mountains, etc., are mind. The conceptual clinging to objects, such as "it is a mountain," etc., should be understood as mind. Therefore, the object of appearance, mountains, etc., are not mind.
