Just as dust settles on a mirror, obscuring it, one wanders in this samsara. As it is said in the Great Tantra of the Net of Illusion: "Emaho! From the heart of the Sugata, emanates from one's own conceptual thoughts." The analogy for obscuration is: Just as clouds obscure the sun in the sky, merits are not manifest, and the illusion of pleasure and pain appears. From the beginning, the luminous essence, in its nature like the sky, wisdom, like the sun, is spontaneously present, but because of the sudden obscuration, like clouds, it is obscured. Therefore, the immeasurable qualities of the Dharmadhatu and wisdom, the Dharmakaya and Rupakaya, are not manifest in the state of ordinary beings, because the cloud of habitual patterns of various pleasures and pains of illusion appears. In this way, the nature of the mind is luminous, and all obscurations can be purified, being adventitious. As it is said in the Pramanavarttika: "The nature of the mind is luminous, and obscurations are adventitious." How is it like a cloud? Just as rain comes from clouds and crops grow. Due to ignorance, the mind, like a cloud, intensely stirs with the grasping of subject and object, raining down virtuous and non-virtuous karma, and the result is the nature of the three realms of samsara. Just as rain clouds move in the sky, rain falls, and become the cause of crop growth, from the naturally pure state of mind itself, the clinging to the apprehended and the apprehender universally arises, thereby accumulating various categories of virtuous and non-virtuous actions that create samsara, and from this, experiencing the various appearances of the three realms and six classes of beings, the crops of various pleasures and pains flourish, and like a wheel of fire, it is samsara itself. As it is said in the Precious Garland of the Middle Way: "The circle of samsara is like a wheel of fire, mutually dependent, this conditioned phenomenon is considered samsara." In this way, the distinctions of the three habitual patterns are extensively explained in samsara: All illusory appearances arise from the three habitual patterns, namely, the habitual pattern of objects, the container world, and the five objects such as form that depend on it. Because three different habitual patterns from beginningless time are placed on the alaya, three different appearances appear differently.

External appearances manifested by habitual tendencies, including forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations that encompass the environment and its inhabitants. Although these do not inherently exist either internally or externally, they appear as if they exist externally. When they arise in the mind, and one clings to them as being real, they become objects of acceptance and rejection. Regarding the objects of clinging, the thought that "this is form," differentiating towards external objects, is the differentiation of what is grasped. The same applies to sounds and so on. The inner nature appearing as mind consists of the habitual tendencies of things, the eight aggregates of consciousness, and the virtuous and non-virtuous actions that depend on them. Based on the alaya, which is the basis of various habitual tendencies, there is the appearance of the alaya consciousness, and from it arise the five consciousnesses such as eye consciousness, as well as the mental consciousness that follows the sensory fields, and the afflicted mind. These eight aspects are called the grasping mind. Differentiation towards them is the differentiation of the grasper. Why is it the grasper? Because the ground of habitual tendencies of the alaya is ignorance in essence. Its appearance is non-conceptual, unrelated to any appearing object, merely existing in a state of non-thought. Therefore, it grasps the habitual tendencies of formlessness. From that state, only the aspect of clear awareness, unrelated to objects, is the appearance of the alaya consciousness, which grasps the habitual tendencies of form. And from it arise the five sense consciousnesses, which, although non-conceptual, also grasp the samadhi habitual tendencies of the ground of form. The afflicted mind and mental consciousness both grasp the habitual tendencies of desire. These eight aggregates of consciousness all grasp their respective objects with or without conceptualization, and therefore are called the grasping mind. Depending on it means that the virtuous qualities and non-virtuous qualities, which are completely aroused and accumulated by it, leave habitual tendencies in the mind like gold and tarnish. Completely pacifying the activity of mind and mental factors is the meaning of the Middle Way. Such consciousnesses closely rely on the habitual tendencies of the body, the forms of each of the six realms, and the limbs and branches that depend on them. Because various bodies of gods, humans, and so on appear differently, one clings to them as one's own body. Even in dreams, when seeing water, fire, cliffs, enemies, dogs, and so on, one sees them as harmful to one's own body and runs away, and experiences suffering, and so on.
