What should be strived for is the supreme liberation, and the means to accomplish that liberation. Among all things, it is the most supreme. Now I will thoroughly clarify it. The noble ones, when composing treatises, first express homage, so that after the obstacles are completely pacified, they can be completed perfectly, and therefore they make a vow to compose. Otherwise, it would be slightly difficult, and due to the firmness of the meaning of the words, they would become lazy, be harmed by others, or seeing their own fatigue, they would think of abandoning it halfway. To completely protect against these, they do so. Therefore, whoever is a being who desires enlightenment is one with good fortune for the Dharma. The supreme thing they should strive for is liberation, and the pinnacle of the means to accomplish liberation is the path of the Great Vehicle. Therefore, I vow to explain that extremely excellent, profound, and vast principle. This actually reveals the necessity and connection of this treatise well. When wise people enter anything, they think: What is the subject matter, necessity, ultimate necessity, and connection in this? In order to enter well after seeing these, it is explained here. What is the difference between the profound and vast realms? Wanting to abandon samsara and achieve liberation, what is the nature of hearing, thinking, and meditating? These will be explained in this treatise. From its nature, in the twenty-two chapters, after careful examination, entering the path of liberation by relying on this treatise is the necessity. The perfect accomplishment of enlightenment after entering is the necessity of necessity, that is, the ultimate necessity. Relying on the meaning and the expression, the fruit of practice is accomplished as it is realized, and these also arise one depending on the other, so they are connected, and that is the connection. These have revealed the cause of entering the composition of the treatise. Now I will reveal the object of entry, the body of the treatise: revealing that the nature of samsara is to be abandoned, and revealing that the nature of nirvana is to be obtained, these two are the body of this treatise, the vajra-like place. Among them, ignorance is the confused samsara. First, the basis from which confusion arises is explained. The original clear light Tathagatagarbha (Tibetan: ཐོག་མའི་འོད་གསལ་བདེ་གཤེགས་སྙིང་པོ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: आदि-प्रभास्वर-तथागतगर्भ, Sanskrit Romanization: ādi-prabhāsvara-tathāgatagarbha, Literal Chinese Meaning: Original Light-Tathagatagarbha). The basis of meaning, the unconditioned nature (Tibetan: དོན་གྱི་ཀུན་གཞི་རང་བཞིན་འདུས་མ་བྱས།, Sanskrit Devanagari: अर्थस्य-आलय-स्वभाव-असंस्कृत, Sanskrit Romanization: arthasya-ālaya-svabhāva-asaṃskṛta, Literal Chinese Meaning: Meaning's Alaya-Nature-Unconditioned). Primordially pure, like the sky.

Due to the stirring of the habits of ignorance, sentient beings are deluded. That basis is also like the sky, the foundation that depends on samsara, empty from the beginning, selfless in essence, luminous like the sun and moon, spontaneously accomplished. Because it has existed since beginningless time, it is immutable. Because it transcends the limits of elaboration, it is naturally luminous. Because it abides in the realm where body and wisdom are inseparable, it is the essence of the Sugata. It is the abiding nature upon which the dharmas of samsara and nirvana depend, called the meaning of the universal ground, uncreated and abiding in great purity from the very beginning. Moreover, the dharmas of samsara, karma and afflictions, depend in a way that has no support, just as clouds depend on the surface of the sky. They do not touch or adhere to the ground, but abide in that state. In reality, because there is no inherent nature, support and supported are not established, but they appear to depend, which is an imputation. In the Mahayana sutra, the Uttaratantra, it says: Earth depends on water, water on wind, wind on space. Space does not depend on wind, water, or the element of earth. Likewise, aggregates, elements, and sense bases depend on karma and afflictions. Karma and afflictions do not depend on proper attention, but always abide on attention. Improper attention abides on the purity of mind. The nature of mind, all dharmas, does not abide on anything. As it is said. The dharmas of nirvana depend inseparably like the sun and its rays, because they have always abided without separation. The nature of these will be explained in detail below, so I will not elaborate here. In such a state of the ground, the clouds of sudden obscuration of ignorance and conceptualization, the sleep of grasping and clinging delusion arises, becoming habits of objects, meanings, and bodies, obscuring the self-luminous essence of the nature of awareness. From the state of the original abiding nature, which is self-luminous, from beginningless ignorance, the ability of self-illuminating awareness arises. Taking that as the cause, the sleep of grasping and clinging arises, which is a sudden obscuration. Establishing three habits of mind on the alaya is: objects such as form, and the meaning of the aggregates of consciousness that grasp them, and the habits that appear in one's own body even though they are not there, obscuring the original ground and the wisdom of awareness, the luminous essence.
