Because it is a dharma that exists, it is the very expression of the Dharmakaya. Secondly, the difference between mind and wisdom is twofold: briefly revealing the essence, and extensively explaining their respective natures. First, as it says in the "String of Pearls": "The difference between mind and wisdom, the wise should know." Therefore, the mind is that which is associated with the root ignorance, a dharma with defilements, the self-cause of samsara, like a cloud obscuring the sun of wisdom. Wisdom is that which is associated with the Dharmakaya, without defilements, not coexisting with the mind's memory and thought, like the sun. As it says in the same text: "The mind is the basis of all habitual tendencies, it is the defilement of sentient beings. The mind grasps at objects of perception, therefore it is the nature of samsara." And again: "Wisdom is separate from the very basis of memory." Also, in the "Six Spaces": "If the essence of mind and wisdom is not distinguished, it is like the sun obscured by a mass of clouds, unable to perform the function of outward manifestation." Moreover, the mind is the basis, source, accumulator, and instigator of all actions, afflictions, and habitual tendencies, constantly dwelling in the house of ignorance, opposing and obscuring the sun of wisdom. As it says in "Self-Arisen": "The mind gathers all habitual tendencies. The mind instigates all habitual tendencies. The mind accumulates all afflictions. The mind is the basis of all habitual tendencies, and these habitual tendencies are difficult to stop, therefore obscuring one's own appearance, coexisting with ignorance." And as it says in the "String of Pearls": "The mind is the cause of arising from aggregation, and is also mixed with defilement, it is the Alaya-consciousness that gathers everything, etc., because it has become a number of defilements." Therefore, because awareness possesses the obscuring mind, it is called a sentient being. Because the mind accumulates karma, it creates the karma of wandering from one delusion to another. If the mind is liberated from awareness, purified and exhausted, it is called a Buddha, because awareness is free from defilements. Therefore, the true dharma of defilement to be abandoned is only the mind. As it says in the same text: "If the mind is abandoned, one becomes a Buddha, the defilements of all sentient beings are exhausted. Beings wander because of the mind, without it they cannot wander. Therefore, beings are like a wheel of delusion."

It is said thus. The mind is also, regarding the realm of appearance, such as "this is this place's appearance," holding onto the designations, names, and general characteristics, that is the mind of the object to be grasped; examining its distinctions and thoroughly distinguishing them, that which grasps, the mind possessing the object, these two are combined. Therefore, that which grasps onto the object is said to be the mind. The necessity of these is also stated in the common treatises: "When the mind ceases, it is directly realized by the body." In the Clear Words, it says, "The activity of the mind and what arises from the mind also ceases." In the Heap of Jewels, it says, "Also separated from mind, intellect, and consciousness, and not abandoning the state of Samadhi, this is the inconceivable secret of the Tathagata's mind." Wisdom is, like the sky, pacified from elaboration, the basis and source of the Buddha's immeasurable qualities, constantly abiding in the home of the Dharmakaya together with the retinue of the ocean of wisdom, burning all the thickets of afflictions and habitual tendencies, existing like fire. As it says in the Garland of Pearls: "Burning all conceptual thoughts, wisdom itself consumes like fire, it is the same as the sky itself, it is the nature of emptiness and clarity with awareness." Here, some who do not understand say that without mind, one would become like a stone or darkness, this is because of little hearing. Even without mind, there is wisdom, therefore awareness does not cease. This is because, when the mind of ignorance and delusion ceases, the bright sun of wisdom arises, just as when night passes and day arises. Some think that ignorance is the pervader of awareness, therefore when the mind ceases, awareness also ceases, this is a very great mistake. Although awareness pervades ignorance, ignorance does not in turn pervade awareness, just like the wisdom of the Buddha. Because ignorance pervades the mind, it is reasonable to be the pervader of the mind, but because it does not pervade awareness, it is thought that ignorance turns away or ceases from the essence of awareness. Therefore, when the mind ceases, although the basis of ignorance and its parts cease, awareness does not cease, because the basis of cessation is awareness. If there is no awareness, then it is appropriate to consider on what it ceases. Here, because ignorance and its mental parts cease, awareness expands into wisdom, enjoying the two knowledges, as it says in the Garland of Pearls: The mind is the movement of
