That sense of arrogance towards one's own side is a manifestation of the innate ego-grasping (Tibetan: ངར་འཛིན་ཉོན་ཡིད་ཀྱི་རྣམ་ཤེས་, meaning: ego-grasping afflicted mind consciousness). And when that awareness becomes coarser, opening the doors of consciousness to all good, bad, and neutral things, and clearly distinguishing them, that is consciousness (Tibetan: ཡིད་ཀྱི་རྣམ་ཤེས་). Further, when awareness becomes very coarse and spreads outward, clearly seeing things, that is eye consciousness (Tibetan: མིག་གི་ཤེས་པ་). Clearly hearing sounds, that is ear consciousness (Tibetan: རྣ་བའི་ཤེས་པ་). Similarly, when smell, taste, and touch manifest clearly in sequence, they correspond to nose consciousness (Tibetan: སྣ་ལྕེ་ལུས་ཀྱི་ཤེས་པ་), tongue consciousness (Tibetan: ལྕེ་ལུས་ཀྱི་ཤེས་པ་), and body consciousness (Tibetan: ལུས་ཀྱི་ཤེས་པ་) respectively. All of these belong to the category of 'consciousness' (Tibetan: རྣམ་ཤེས་), not 'wisdom' (Tibetan: ཡེ་ཤེས་). Therefore, generally speaking, they are not the ultimate object of meditation for a yogi. However, for beginners, they can serve as temporary objects. For the very few individuals with extremely sharp faculties, it may be possible from the beginning to meditate on the manifestation of wisdom (Tibetan: ཡེ་ཤེས་). But for most individuals with ordinary faculties, starting from the aforementioned consciousness (Tibetan: ཡིད་), the coarse consciousness (Tibetan: རྣམ་ཤེས་) itself, due to its very clear object, falls into excessive conceptualization and cannot be calmed. Therefore, they cannot be taken as the object of meditation themselves. However, the root of all these consciousnesses—the alaya-consciousness (Tibetan: ཀུན་གཞིའི་རྣམ་ཤེས་)—because it is not altered by any object, lacks clear conceptualization, and is a subtle state of clear and knowing awareness. Deep within it, innate wisdom (Tibetan: གཉུག་མའི་ཡེ་ཤེས་) exists in a very close way as the nature of reality (Tibetan: ཆོས་ཉིད་), its essence being extremely pure, in a state beyond concepts, ultimate, and non-dualistic. By virtue of this power, the alaya-consciousness (Tibetan: ཀུན་གཞིའི་ཡེ་ཤེས་) and consciousness (Tibetan: རྣམ་ཤེས་) exist like a sword and its sheath. Therefore, just as one needs to rely on the sheath to gradually master the sword itself, one also needs to rely on the external alaya-consciousness (Tibetan: ཀུན་གཞིའི་རྣམ་ཤེས་) to gradually manifest the inner alaya-consciousness (Tibetan: ཀུན་གཞིའི་ཡེ་ཤེས་). For this reason, for beginners, the object of meditation is the alaya-consciousness (Tibetan: ཀུན་གཞིའི་རྣམ་ཤེས་) that is the root of coarse consciousness (Tibetan: རྣམ་ཤེས་), a subtle consciousness (Tibetan: རྣམ་པར་ཤེས་པ་) that is a clear and knowing state, unaltered by any object. When observing it, do not forget the essence of awareness, and understand its true nature with mindfulness (Tibetan: དྲན་པས་མི་བརྗེད་) and clear comprehension (Tibetan: ཤེས་བཞིན་གྱིས་ཡིན་ལུགས་ཇི་བཞིན་ཧ་གོ་), do not let the mind wander elsewhere, but abide in that state. Continuously maintain this state, and like a candle naturally shining and muddy water naturally clearing, abide in meditation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, in what activities do the gross consciousnesses manifest? For the various thoughts encompassed by the three times of past, present, and future, it is difficult for beginners to recognize them immediately. Therefore, from the moment a thought arises, one should immediately recognize and stop the thought, or purify it naturally through various methods, so that one can abide in non-conceptual awareness. Moreover, during this time, if the mind is distracted by good, bad, or neutral things, or especially if attachment to sensory pleasures arises, one must use any of the three methods of focus, non-effort, and self-liberation, according to one's capacity, to prevent these distractions and attachments. Furthermore, if over a period of time, the mind's focus weakens, or the target is not clear, and the fault of dullness arises, one should watch attentively in a clear state, or focus the mind on one's own target. By various methods, one should also prevent these faults, striving to keep the consciousness in a self-illuminating state, away from thoughts, and without clinging to anything. This is crucial. At this time, various and countless empty images will appear in the manifestation of consciousness. All of these are merely empty images that appear when consciousness abides in the true state of things, and signs that are close to primordial wisdom. Therefore, from any aspect, this is a sign of approaching the reality of Dharmadhatu. Therefore, for the special habits accustomed to the realm of profound secrets, there is no doubt that great benefits will certainly arise in this life and future lives. This is true and unwavering, and there is no need to doubt it. What has been said above is only the state where the manifestation of consciousness has not yet separated from the beginner. However, for fortunate, gradually practicing beginners, there is no other way than to start from the entrance of this vehicle. Therefore, it is very important to first seek a place of abiding on the basis of the clarity and awareness of the Alaya consciousness. It should be known that these methods arise from the particularity of consciousness in the true state of things. As for the ultimate reality of primordial wisdom, if according to its nature, it is self-born wisdom, complete with all virtues, and the sole realm of the profound intention of all Buddhas of the past, present, and future. This is not the time to discuss this. So, what should be discussed? That is, how the ultimate original reality manifests on the temporary path during the course of practice. In this regard, it can be elaborated slightly, that is, how it manifests from the paths of the Small and Great Vehicles of the Sutras. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
