Although it is said in the scriptures that the lifespan of the bardo (intermediate state) is indefinite, there are specific reasons for saying so: one is to instill fear in certain beings, and the other is to consider that certain powerful causes and conditions may occur. For example, although it is said that a mother's gestation period is nine months and ten days, it is similar to an old person staying in the womb for sixty years. Therefore, here, the explanation is mainly based on the majority of bardo states. The *Compendium of Abhidharma* (Kunlas Btus) states: 'Thus, it remains for seven days, and this is the death and transference in between.' The *Section on Grounds* (Sade) states: 'If it is still not obtained, then the body is abandoned and again, it remains for seven days.' Therefore, beings whose karmic impetus is very swift will obtain a new body on the very day that the previous body and consciousness separate, so the state of existence in the bardo is very short. Those who are slightly slower will find the causes and conditions for birth within one week. If they do not find it, they will abandon the mind-body of the bardo and experience a brief vision of death. Afterwards, the *Section on Grounds* states: 'That deceased one, either manifests and accomplishes in that very place, or in another unequal place.' Therefore, waking up from death, if the causes and conditions for birth are complete, they will be reborn in another of the six realms; if the causes and conditions are not complete, they will be born in the bardo state and experience the enjoyments and visions mentioned earlier. For those who are very slow, the *Section on Grounds* states: 'If the causes for birth are not obtained, then it remains even up to seven weeks.' Beyond this time limit, they will definitely find the causes for birth. Therefore, like this, alternately experiencing the visions of birth and death, after experiencing seven sets of seven days, they will definitely obtain the opportunity to be born in one of the six realms. Therefore, recognize the bardo state from the shortest lifespan of one day to the longest of seven weeks. From now on, do not cling to any perfections in samsara, because they are meaningless. Generate a strong wish to be able to escape from this suffering-filled samsara forever. Furthermore, in very profound teachings, it is also mentioned that the four fearful sounds and the three perilous abysses are the seven causes that lead to the arising of suffering in the bardo. The four fearful sounds are: when earth dissolves into water, it makes a sound like a mountain collapsing; when water dissolves into fire, it makes a sound like the ocean churning at the end of an eon. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When fire dissolves into wind, there arises a sound like the fire at the end of time; when wind dissolves into consciousness, there arises a sound like the wind at the end of time. Whatever arises, these are the sounds of the elements becoming equal in their own place, so you need not be even slightly afraid. The three terrifying precipices are: Hell, hungry ghosts, and animals. Upon seeing any of these three realms of evil destinies, or feeling that you will fall into them, or fearing that you will fall into them, whatever you see, you need not be terrified or afraid. In short, whatever of the seven signs may dawn, recognize it as a bardo delusion arising from your own mind, and you will not be afraid. If, however, you come under the power of delusion and fear arises, then it is crucial to remember the refuge. Thinking, 'Lama, Three Jewels, know that we have no other hope or refuge, so please now hold us with compassion,' take refuge, and remember the virtuous deeds you have done in the past. Through introducing these seven points, having recognized that you are in the bardo, make this aspiration: Relying on the instructions of the virtuous friend, in this bardo state, may I attain the state of perfect enlightenment, the fully awakened Buddha. For that purpose, I prostrate to and take refuge in the precious Three Jewels, and listen to the profound empowerments.' First, visualize in the sky before you the root and lineage lamas, the yidam deities, and countless Buddhas and bodhisattvas as vividly present. Then, with body, speech, and mind, pay homage to them, and recite: 'Chief among them, the Victorious One, the protector of beings.' If you wish, you can also perform other prostrations extensively. After that, you should enter into the empowerments and so forth. It seems that those who are eloquent in practicing this method introduce it through various means such as the six uncertain places, but since those have no scriptural basis and contradict reason, I consider them to be merely words that deceive fools, so I have not written them. Second, How to Act in Other Circumstances How to act in other circumstances is also twofold: how to act for a yogi who is practicing the path, and how to act for ordinary people. The first is: the teacher should keep the deceased's mind undistracted, and recite: 'The truth of the venerable root and lineage, glorious and holy lamas,' and so forth. By the blessing of the great truth, the deceased --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
