Due to the power of various non-virtuous actions, the messengers of Yama (Lord of Death) with eyes as red as fire, terrifying angry wrinkles, chasing with various weapons, crying out in agony, and dogs and jackals making noises and chasing, etc. Furthermore, the people, yaks, sheep, etc., that one has killed in the past, beat oneself in the place where one resides, etc., many illusions arise. Like bird feathers scattered by the wind, one wanders uncontrollably and freely, etc. At that time, all these terrifying appearances arise from the delusion of one's own mind, and there is nothing established externally. Even if they were established, in the Bardo (intermediate state) there is no body made of flesh and blood. The mind body cannot be crushed even under stones, cannot be drowned in water, cannot be carried away by the wind, and cannot fall into a ravine. It is not frightened by weapons or the fangs of wild beasts. Whatever may come, even if the three thousand worlds rise up as enemies, there is nothing to fear or be afraid of. Think that all appearances are illusions. The way to practice this is to have the three ways of taking hold of the Bardo. The so-called 'taking hold of the body as a deity' is to meditate on oneself as whatever Yidam (personal deity) is suitable, such as Great Compassionate One. Even when seeing other beings, meditate on them as deities. Constantly recite whatever mantra is suitable, such as Mani. Think of all speech as the sound of mantra. Decide that all thoughts and ideas are without grasping and free from elaboration, and meditate on that. Furthermore, what can protect one from the fears and sufferings of the Bardo? The Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) can protect one. Therefore, with the Kunrig Root Mandala, etc., pray to the Three Jewels: 'Three Jewels, please listen, please deliver me from the fears of the Bardo.' With the faith of body, speech, and mind, and the three confidences of desire, for the deceased person (state the name) who has passed away from this world to the next, pray: 'Please, right now, deliver him/her from all the illusions and fears in the Bardo.' Take refuge with intense longing, Make prostrations, etc., and focus your intention single-pointedly. Mainly recite the names of the Buddhas, etc. This is the extensive explanation of the Bardo teachings, the original words of Ngorchen Palden Dondrup. The medium length is compiled by all the Sakyas, omitting the longer quotations and sentences from that. The concise version is an excerpt of the Bardo teachings from the Kunrig ritual composed by Jamyang Sonam Wangchuk. Thus, it is well explained according to the immaculate scriptures, mainly for the benefit of others. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the oral instruction. This is the root that benefits both now and in the future. Please accept this nectar-like advice. Let go of the food and wealth accumulated through hard work, let go of the relatives who have been with you for a long time and are cherished, and generate compassion for those pitiful Bardo beings who are helpless and wandering alone. Seeing the relatives behind, their faces as dark as rain clouds, tears falling like rain, filling the earth, and the friends beating their chests and wailing like thunder, generate compassion for them. Cut off all the evil thoughts generated by the three poisons of greed, hatred, and ignorance, and with the root of all Dharmas—genuine compassion and altruistic Bodhicitta—use skillful means to guide the dead and the living onto the right path. Completely cut off the two obscurations and their habitual tendencies, and as the infallible teacher (Shakyamuni Buddha) said, with endless ritual details, lead the dead and the living into the city of liberation. Some people have no compassion for the dead and no intention to benefit the living, but only recite scriptures for gold, turquoise, tea, and silk, using false Samadhi, ruining themselves and others. Just as the poor seek food, foolish people beat drums, dance, and sing whatever lies they can think of, ruining themselves and others. Not to mention practicing the meaning of the scriptures as they are, they cannot even follow the words with their minds, but only recite false rituals like parrots, ruining themselves and others. May all sentient beings, immeasurable, kind, and boundless, quickly attain the state of the Two-legged Lord (Buddha) through the merit of properly teaching the direct and indirect disciples. Ngagwang Kunga Lodro Sangye Tenpai Gyaltsen Palsangpo of the Sakya school wrote this extensive, intermediate, and concise ritual of Bardo teachings for the benefit of himself and others. The scribe was Jhulungpa Sonam Ozer. Sarva Mangalam (Tibetan: སརྦ་མངྒ་ལཾ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: सर्व मङ्गलम्, Sanskrit Romanization: Sarva Mangalam, Literal Chinese meaning: All auspiciousness)! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
