Ngawang Kunga Lodro's Instructions, NKL304: 'The Illuminating Path: Instructions for Introducing the Bardo' 7-207 'The Illuminating Path: Instructions for Introducing the Bardo' Namo Gurusattvaya. How to Combine with Other Rituals 'The Illuminating Path: Instructions for Introducing the Bardo' namaḥ guru sādhu dāya Homage to the Guru, the virtuous giver). By the royal method of the great forces of the two accumulations, Having utterly vanquished the inexhaustible battlefield of the two obscurations, Possessing power over the wondrous wealth of the two kayas, I pay homage to the supreme teacher, the chief of bipeds. To beings who are attached to the six realms and wander in samsara, I shall speak of the sacred Dharma. As it arises from the Buddha's words and their commentaries, Listen well with the joy of intelligence. Having first made offerings and the commitment to speak, what is to be explained is the arrangement for benefiting sentient beings abiding in the bardo. This can be done for up to forty-nine days after the body and consciousness have separated, but not earlier or later. Earlier, because the deceased is abiding in the clear light and cannot be contacted; later, because they have already taken another rebirth, and this method will not be of benefit. Therefore, having determined the time when the deceased is in the bardo, there are two ways to introduce them to its nature: combining with other rituals, and taking appropriate measures for different situations. First, the teacher, without looking at material gain but with great compassion, should say these words: 7-208 'O, deceased [name], listen! Our teacher, the incomparable King Shakya, said in the Extensive Play Sutra: 'The three realms are impermanent, like clouds in the sky. The birth and death of beings are like watching a dance. The life of a person is like lightning in the sky. It goes swiftly, quickly, like water flowing down a steep mountain.' In general, all of the three realms are of the nature of impermanence. In particular, the life of beings is impermanent, like autumn clouds, the gestures of a dancer, lightning, and water flowing down a steep mountain. Therefore, your lifespan, karma, and merit are exhausted, the appearances of this life have ceased, and now you are in the bardo. As it arises from the stainless scriptures, I shall introduce you to the reality of the bardo, which can be ascertained through seven points: the essence of the bardo, its names, its mode of existence, which realm it belongs to, the form of its body, its visions and mode of travel, and the length of its lifespan. First, the essence of the bardo: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Sutra says, 'Here, what is death and what is birth? It is the arising of the intermediate state of existence (antarabhava).' Therefore, the intermediate state is called the support of the body that arises between the state of death and the state of birth. Therefore, recognize it through the support of the body. Abandon the thought of seeking rebirth again, and generate the aspiration to obtain a body adorned with marks and signs. The second point is: The Abhidharmakosha says, 'Mind-born, seeking existence, feeding on odors, intermediate existence, accomplishing.' Therefore, the names for your current state are: mind-born, arising from one's own mind; seeking existence, having the nature of seeking rebirth; feeding on odors, going for odors and living on odors; intermediate existence, arising between birth and death; and accomplishing, being the cause of accomplishing before birth manifests. Recognize the intermediate state through these names as well. Do not cling to any name of existence that you deem good, but generate a strong renunciation, desiring to be liberated from it. The third point is: The Abhidharmakosha says, 'The intermediate existence is a transformation birth.' And the Sutra on the Seven Existences says, 'There are seven existences: the existence of hell, the existence of animals, the existence of hungry ghosts, the existence of gods, the existence of humans, and the intermediate existence.' And the Treatise on the Establishment of the Son of Maudgalyayana says, 'The five realms are included in the four modes of birth, but the four modes of birth do not fully include the five realms.' What is not included? The answer is, 'The intermediate existence.' Therefore, your body is a transformation birth from the four modes of birth, and it is not any of the six realms, but the intermediate existence. Recognize the intermediate state through these birth places as well. In the future, do not cling to the birth places and distinctions of realms in samsara, but generate the aspiration to delight in associating with noble friends in a pure land. The fourth point is: The Abhidharmakosha says, 'It is for the sake of a single benefit, having a body shape from the previous time of existence.' And the Compendium says, 'The form of where one will be born.' Therefore, it is formed like the body and form of the realm in which one will be born in the six realms. Furthermore, the Abhidharmakosha says, 'All faculties are complete.' Therefore, the five physical faculties of eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body are all complete. Regarding its color, the Vinaya Minor Matters and others say, 'If one is going to be born in hell, it is like a burnt stump; similarly, if one is going to be born as a hungry ghost...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
