One must abide in perfectly pure discipline. This should also be done in a way that is faultless and complete. As it says in the root text of the Sutra: 'A layperson, a novice monk, and a fully ordained monk should not take the next set of vows without having completed the previous one.' Therefore, when the time is right, one should gradually receive the vows in sequence from a reliable lineage holder, through the respective pure rituals. Regarding the precepts of these vows, one should, as the lama and acharya have taught, make a great effort to keep them firmly in mind. 4-65 One must strive with body, speech, and mind to avoid even the slightest fault, and one must be diligent in what to adopt and abandon, not being perfunctory. The elder Dharma friends should also, with strong compassion, correctly remind and exhort about the precepts. It is very important that the younger monks listen to this with respect. In general, the purpose of practicing Dharma is solely to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. If one ordains to go to hell, it is meaningless. Even if one cannot protect the subtle precepts, one must vow to protect the four root vows (killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying) and the fifth (drinking alcohol) even at the cost of one's life. If, due to past karma or present circumstances, one violates any of the four root vows, and if one enjoys the offerings of faith together with the Sangha, one must be reborn in hell, eating burning iron balls. The fault of breaking the vows also affects the other monks present, hindering them from generating qualities of Dharma. Therefore, in order not to harm the image of Buddhism, and for one's own benefit in future lives, one must be very careful. 4-66 Do not even speak words related to impure conduct. Regarding stealing, do not even have the thought of stealing a single grain of barley. Regarding killing, do not kill even an ant, and do not harm any beings. If you see others doing so, you must try to save them by all means possible. Regarding lying, let alone deceiving lamas and the Sangha, do not even speak ill of different sects or monasteries, and do not lie. Do not engage in divisive talk that disrupts the relationship between teachers and students, Dharma friends, and the monastery. Do not burn others with harsh words that harm both oneself and others. Do not speak meaningless chatter that stirs up afflictions and hinders learning and contemplation. Do not be jealous of others' wealth. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do not covetously desire to possess land, wealth, and power, and do not harbor malicious intentions or engage in any direct or indirect harm to others. From the supreme Lamas, the Three Jewels (Tibetan: དཀོན་མཆོག་གསུམ་, referring to Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha), to the six realms of sentient beings, do not generate even a moment of wrong view; this is a very important distinction to make. If you recognize that you have committed the above-mentioned faults, whether you are a Khenpo (abbot), teacher, or the head of a Dharma assembly, whether you are old or young, of high or low status, whether you are a local or a relative, 4-67 In order to benefit these places, abandon partiality, favoritism, worldly judgments, and refuge in things that are not in accordance with the Dharma. As soon as you realize you have made a mistake, immediately perform one hundred prostrations. The person prostrating should also, with a heart of repentance, visualize themselves, their parents, and the sentient beings of the six realms as numerous as dust particles, and with themselves as the leader, prostrate for all sentient beings. Until the enforcer of the law confirms the transgression, perform prostrations with the five points of the body touching the ground. Visualize having a billion tongues and verbally confess your sins. Make a strong vow in your heart that even if it costs your life, you will not commit sinful actions. If you show an unwilling attitude in body and speech, the offense is very serious, and you must perform three hundred prostrations and offer five butter lamps before the deities. If there are disturbances in the Sangha, malicious intentions, use of poison, or immoral behavior, the Khenpo, teachers, and heads of Dharma assemblies should report to the higher authorities and request permission to impose punishment. For such matters, taking measures similar to the Mongol laws (Hor Khrims) is beneficial for oneself. For those who uphold vows, avoid becoming intoxicated by drinking grain alcohol and adulterated alcohol, which leads to indecent behavior. 4-68 Since you have made a commitment, abstain from all sources of evil destinies, obstacles to liberation, and the root of all careless transgressions—alcohol—whether openly or secretly. However, during New Year celebrations, sacrifices, and fertilizing, a small amount of guest alcohol may be offered to the 'black people' (referring to people of lower status), or a small amount of medicinal alcohol that is definitely beneficial for illness, but otherwise, the habit of drinking alcohol must be cut off. If violated, the enforcer of the law should impose a fine of one 'mar' (weight unit) of butter for each 'tsod' (measurement unit) of alcohol consumed, and the fine should be given to the public fund to improve the tea supply for the Sangha. Furthermore, if improper actions such as destroying crops, gambling, playing dice, archery, or doing business occur, a penalty of one hundred prostrations should be imposed as before. Unless it is necessary for healing purposes, do not hold large gatherings, as it is said: 'Observe speech.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
