The Third Section The Main Practice First, there are two types: common and uncommon. The first is the common one. I and all other sentient beings are in the immeasurable suffering of samsara (cyclic existence). Due to ignorance obscuring our minds, we develop self-grasping and wander in the three realms. We create the three physical actions of killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct; the four verbal actions of lying, slander, harsh speech, and idle talk; and the three mental actions of covetousness, malice, and wrong views. We accumulate countless non-virtuous deeds, and as a result, we experience the sufferings of the eight hot hells, the neighboring hells, the occasional hells, the eight cold hells, the pretas (hungry ghosts) with inner and outer obscurations, the pretas with obscurations upon obscurations, the scattered pretas, the animals dwelling in the ocean, the animals dwelling in the darkness between continents, the scattered animals dwelling in high places, and so on. We continuously endure the sufferings of the three lower realms. Humans experience the suffering of protecting what they have, striving to obtain what they lack, encountering enemies, and being separated from loved ones. Great individuals experience mental suffering, while lesser individuals experience physical suffering. Birth is accompanied by the suffering of dwelling in the womb, aging brings the destruction of youth, sickness destroys health, and death destroys life. Asuras (demigods) experience the suffering of fighting. Gods in the desire realm experience the five signs of decay and the five near signs of decay, at which time their mental suffering is greater than the physical suffering of beings in hell. Gods in the form and formless realms experience the suffering of falling into the lower realms due to wrong views after their virtuous karma is exhausted. A universal monarch may become a slave, Indra (king of the gods) may become an ordinary person, the sun and moon may enter darkness, the outer world may be destroyed, and none of the sentient beings remain in their original places. Beings in the bardo (intermediate state) experience four terrifying sounds, six uncertain signs, and three frightening precipices. In short, all beings are caught in the waves of suffering and the very essence of suffering. These suffering beings are all kind benefactors who have been our parents countless times since the beginning of samsara. However, due to the torment of karma, we wander through birth and death, failing to recognize each other. Instead, we become enemies, harming each other, repaying kindness with harm, and endlessly wandering in the suffering of existence like a potter's wheel. To liberate ourselves from these sufferings, we must strive now that we have obtained a precious human body with leisure and opportunity through a small amount of virtuous karma. This body is difficult to obtain, as it arises from practicing the ten virtues and upholding moral discipline. There are far more beings who have not obtained a human body than those who have, and among those who have obtained a human body, few practice the Dharma. Among those who practice the Dharma, even fewer attain realization. Therefore, we must practice diligently and seize this rare opportunity. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The hell beings are as numerous as the dust particles of the great earth; The pretas (hungry ghosts) are as dense as a blizzard; the animals are as numerous as the mash of beer. In comparison, generally, obtaining a body in the higher realms is rare, and especially obtaining a human body with leisure and endowments is even rarer. It is like a single-holed yoke floating on the sea, not fixed in one place, drifting with the wind. And a blind turtle at the bottom of the sea, surfacing once every hundred years, its neck happening to fit into the hole of that yoke is just as difficult. It is also as unlikely as a large amount of white mustard seeds being poured onto an upright needle tip and staying on the tip. It is also as rare as throwing beans at a wall and having them stick to it. From a numerical perspective, obtaining leisure and endowments is very difficult. In essence, one must be free from the eight states of unfreedom: the three lower realms, long-lived gods, border regions, those with wrong views, times without Buddhas, and mutes, which are places where there is no opportunity to practice Dharma. Even if born as a human, one must be born in a central land where the Buddha's fourfold assembly resides, with complete faculties, having sincere faith in the true Dharma, not having committed the five heinous crimes oneself, nor having instigated others to commit them, nor rejoicing in the sins committed by others—these are the five personal endowments. A Buddha appears, teaches the Dharma, the teachings abide, and then oneself and others can enter the Dharma, providing favorable conditions for practitioners—these are the five other endowments. One must possess these eighteen endowments, so in essence, obtaining leisure and endowments is very difficult. If one obtains this rare body, its benefit is greater than a wish-fulfilling jewel. Because a wish-fulfilling jewel can only eliminate poverty in this life, while this body can accomplish happiness in this life, happiness in future lives as humans and gods, and even the lesser enlightenment of shravakas and pratyekabuddhas, and the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment of Buddhahood. This body with great meaning will surely perish quickly, and death is certain, and when death will occur is uncertain. At the time of death, relatives, possessions, and powerful strength cannot help; one can only go naked and alone to a strange land, enduring endless suffering. At that time, in order to gain the courage of a practitioner with warmth, a middling fearlessness, and a lower-level lack of regret, one must diligently practice the excellent Dharma. However, the enlightenment of shravakas and pratyekabuddhas, who only liberate themselves from samsara, is irresponsible. Although it is necessary to liberate all sentient beings from samsara, one does not have this ability by oneself and the great figures of the world, such as shravakas and pratyekabuddhas. Only the perfect Buddhas who have cut off the extremes of samsara and nirvana have this ability, therefore, I, for the benefit of all sentient beings... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
