Having departed, it possesses the characteristics of being detached from worldly affairs. Similarly, it is said in the common vehicle as well: "A spiritual friend is peaceful, gentle, extremely tranquil, diligent in virtues, especially rich in scriptural authority, truly understanding, possessing skillful speech, compassionate in nature, abandoning weariness, one should rely on such a friend." Furthermore, one who does not possess the characteristics does not possess those qualities, and especially it says therein: "A teacher who does not possess the characteristics is one with little wisdom and great arrogance, whose vows and commitments are extremely corrupted, whose view and conduct of mantra are deteriorated, who lacks compassion and seeks gain." Secondly, the greatness of a qualified guru is that in the last chapter, it is said to be Samantabhadra himself: "The great secret essence of the hand seal of all the Tathagatas, whoever speaks after realizing it, that is me, and also complete empowerment." Thirdly, the way to impart teachings is, in the thirteenth chapter, it says: "One who is a suitable vessel, with good and stable nature, is generous in giving body and possessions, should never be given to others. If given to the ignorant and contemptuous, one's life will be exhausted untimely, and one will dwell long in burning and mixing." And in the Dense Array Ornament it says: "One who has become a vessel of vast Dharma, should not be given to inferior Dharma, nor should superior Dharma be spoken to the inferior." Therefore, one should speak after examining the vessel. Why? Because it will cause great harm to oneself and others. In the Marvelous King it says: "A teacher who does not examine the disciple is an enemy, therefore it harms in this life and the next." Therefore. Secondly, there are three: characteristics, greatness, and how to listen. The first is, generally, having faith and commitment, being generous and willing to serve, respecting the Dharma and the guru, being able to keep secrets and being diligent in practice. As said before: "The characteristics of a mantra disciple are, respecting the guru and being willing to serve, having great faith, shame, and modesty, being able to keep secrets and being diligent in practice." In particular, having the wisdom of previous study, reflection, and meditation, and becoming a vessel for this Dharma. As it says here: "Should be held by those who are well-versed in study, reflection, and meditation, possessing excellent wisdom, being a suitable vessel, with good and stable nature, generous in giving body and possessions." Similarly, in the common vehicle's treatises as well.

Having respect for the Lama, complete purity of discipline, constant diligence in meditation and recitation, being strict, gentle, and endowed with patience, it is said that one is a Dharma-holder who abides in striving for vows. Furthermore, the opposite of this is: "For those who are not vessels, especially those whose vows and samayas are impure, who do not respect the Dharma and the Lama, who curse friends and siblings, who are confused about the correct path, who have no shame in the three doors, and who indulge in distraction and non-virtue, these are to be abandoned. As it is said: If given to the ignorant and distracted, life will be exhausted prematurely, and they will remain in burning and roasting for a long time." Secondly, the greatness of a qualified vessel is: As it is said: "Whoever has faith in this, of all the mandalas of the Buddhas, in all directions and times, by practicing all the mandalas, will be regarded as a close son." And "That which holds the supreme lineage of the Victorious Ones, will be honored by the lord of the world and his retinue. The holy ones and the holy ones, will bless them as sons and brothers, enter the realm of the Sugatas, and unite with the fearless Samantabhadra." And "That is certainly a prophecy, the son is born from the heart, and abides in the realm of the Joyful Vidyadhara." Thirdly: The three faults of the vessel, listening well by being free from the six stains. The three faults are: not seeking the meaning of the words even a little, like an overturned vessel; even if understood a little, it is not stable, like a vessel with a hole in the bottom; even if understood, it does not become an antidote to afflictions, but becomes a friend, like a poisonous vessel. Listening by being free from these three faults. As it is said in the intermediate Mother Tantra: "Listen well and completely, and keep it in mind, and I will tell you." Like that. Listening well is for the poisonous vessel, listening completely is for the overturned vessel, and keeping it in mind is the instruction for the vessel with a hole in the bottom. The six stains are: As it is said in the Vyakhyana Rigpa: "Pride and disbelief, not seeking meaning, outward distraction inward gathering, listening wearily are stains." That is to say, the pride of thinking oneself superior to the teacher and friends, disbelief in the teacher, the Dharma, and fellow practitioners, not having desire and seeking for the Dharma, the senses chasing after external objects, not focusing single-pointedly, and the mind contracting inward due to dullness and weariness.
