, and, if (the vows) are damaged, protecting them through restoration is the method of the precious vase. The first is the method of noble individuals, which is to see the benefits and drawbacks, to have great shame and embarrassment, and to guard with utmost steadfastness by not transgressing the boundaries of what should be abandoned and adopted, with pure mindfulness and awareness. As it says in Rangshar: "One should abide in the vows as they are. If one does not let go even for an eon, that is the method of guarding the great vows." The second is the method of some intermediate individuals, which is to be afraid of the faults of breaking (vows), and to restore them through restoration in the manner of desiring the benefits of guarding (them). Among these, the vows of the Hearers are like a broken earthenware bowl that cannot be repaired, and the vows of the Bodhisattvas are like a broken earthenware vessel that can only be glued together. However, the vows of Secret Mantra, like a dented precious vessel that can be straightened, are restored by being filled, which is taught to be the most excellent. That is to say, it is only valid for the same lineage of vows. If one needs to take vows again later, it is called unrestored, because one has to take vows from the beginning. Mantra is only about restoration, not about fundamental repair, so if one strives, it is the key to liberation in one lifetime. Otherwise, that obscuration will not allow one to be liberated. The method of purification for this is, as it says in Rangshar: "If the guru's vows are broken, one should perform a vast tsok wheel, and the vajra brothers are the same." And, the method of purification is as follows: "The ritual of a hundred lamps, reciting the hundredfold giving up and replenishing, performing various confessions." And, "Offerings of objects that please the guru, offering to the noble ones with whatever wealth is available." That is to say, this is with regard to the disciple. If the guru's vows are broken, there is no method of restoration, because the basis of confession itself is broken, which is harmful to both guru and disciple. If the disciple's vows are broken, there is a method of restoration, because one can rely on the guru to confess, and there is no harm to the guru, because there is a difference between the upper and lower basis. As it says in Rangshar: "If the guru breaks (vows), there is no method of purification. Both will give rise to great weeping and wailing. If the disciple breaks (vows), there is a method of purification. Reciting vast scriptures, turning a vast tsok wheel, it is said that the three spheres should be completely purified."

Thus it is said. Purification through confession is also mentioned in the same (scripture): If one performs confession in this way, all thoughts will be accomplished, all desires will be fulfilled, all actions will be completed. Thus it is said. If such omens appear beforehand, perform the confession mentioned above. If performed, the accomplishment of dispelling will arise. Thus it is said. This is in terms of the common aspect. If a disciple transgresses against the Vajra Master, it is said that confession alone cannot completely eliminate the consequences; one must experience the results in some way. As the "Supreme Secret Vow Tantra" says: Those who revile the Vajra Master, even if they confess, will be tormented in the lower realms due to the residue of karma. Therefore, one should strive to protect (the vows). Thus it is said. Therefore, in general, discipline is said to be the basis of qualities, so it must be unbroken and pure. The "Letter to a Friend" says: Discipline is like the earth for growth and non-growth, it is the basis of qualities, so it is said to be well-established. Thus it is said. In particular, the basis of the Secret Mantra vehicle is only pure vows, so it is crucial to maintain this purity. The "Vajrasattva Heart Mirror" says: The vows of the Vajra vehicle are like the earth, the supreme source of all that arises. Thus it is said. Thus, from which secret king tantras do these distinctions of empowerment and vows come? The "Perfect Spontaneity," "Heart Mirror," "Complete Power," and "Self-Arisen" state that there are things to be received again and things to be protected. The "Jeweled Ornament Arrangement" says that it is half and half. The "Ashes," "Pearl Rosary," and "Heap of Jewels" say that there are none. However, the "Ashes" says: All four have been taught, but they are very brief, mainly symbolized by signs. Third, extensively explaining the stages of the instructions that completely liberate, there are three: establishing the connection of meaning, determining the method of practice, and truly establishing the instructions. First, in "Awareness Self-Liberation," it says: After the empowerment mandala is complete, the instructions should be extensively imparted. Thus it is said. The "Vajrasattva Heart Mirror" says: After all the empowerments are complete, impart the instructions mentioned above. Thus it is said. Without receiving empowerment, one should not teach the secret mantra instructions, because there is danger in revealing secrets to an unsuitable vessel.
