Firstly, the distinction is: what is mind? It is the dharma of samsara, the nature of karma and habitual tendencies, the fault of arising with defilements. When it is present in awareness, it is called sentient being. That mind causes the six realms of beings to be confused individually. When that awareness is separated from mind, it is called suddenly free from defilements, a Buddha. What is wisdom? It is the dharma of transcendence of suffering, like fire burning karma and habitual tendencies, free from all conceptualizations, the nature of emptiness and clarity like the sky. As the "String of Pearls" says: "Mind is the basis of all habitual tendencies, it is the defilement of embodied beings. Mind grasps at objects, therefore it is the nature of samsara. When that mind is separated, it is enlightenment, purifying the defilements of all embodied beings." "Beings go by that mind, otherwise they cannot go. Therefore, beings are like a revolving wheel. The heart is free from all movement, not like an inanimate object, it knows, touches, and illuminates clearly. Burning all conceptualizations, wisdom itself consumes like fire, it is equal to the sky itself, it is emptiness, clarity, and awareness. Therefore, wisdom shows the light, and non-discriminating compassion arises naturally, pervading and connecting all, perfecting all dharmas. Memory itself is without memory, wisdom is free from the basis of memory." Thus it is said. Secondly, if mind and wisdom are not distinguished, then the root of the appearance of objects will not be severed, therefore the object of mind, which is the confused appearance, has the fault of not being liberated from samsara. As the "Lion's Strength Perfection" says: "If mind and wisdom are not distinguished, the root of the appearance of objects will not be severed, therefore it is difficult to realize the meaning of the faultless dharma nature." Thus it is said. Therefore, the object of mind is the confused appearance, it is the dharma of samsara, if summarized, it is the six: form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharma. These appear from the habitual tendencies of the mind, like the appearance of hair falling in one's vision. If it appears, it appears to the confused mind. The object of wisdom is the pure dharma nature, like the sky, and the clear light appearance, such as the vast realms of body and wisdom. Secondly, the fault of not knowing is: if one knows the nature of mind, it is wisdom. This present appearance is the clear light of wisdom, if one knows mind, it is wisdom, so it is said.

Due to misunderstanding the words and considering the mere state of non-conceptual mind as wisdom, there are many such instances. The possibility of error in this aspect is very high. Although the faults of explaining are endless, to briefly state, since the mind is grasping, wisdom also becomes grasping; since the mind is tainted, wisdom also becomes tainted; and since the mind is the appearance of samsaric dharmas to be abandoned, wisdom also becomes that. As stated in the Two Truths: "Mind and mental factors in the three realms, the aspect of fabricated imputation is conceptualization." Furthermore, since appearance is seen as delusion, luminosity becomes a deluded appearance; since appearance is a common appearance to ordinary beings, luminosity becomes established as a common appearance. If this is accepted, then all would be liberated like yogis. Since appearance and mind have the phenomena of birth, death, transference, and change, wisdom and its appearance also become that. Many such faults can be pointed out. Therefore, it is advised not to rely on the views of those who are even more ignorant than ignorance. If one wants to attain the fruit of Buddhahood based on the mind, then the cause and effect or the basis and result will be confused, leading to perversion. As stated in Rangshar: "Some want to seek the fruit in the mind. The opposite of that is, what is the entity of the mind? The detailed answer is: because the mind has no entity. Then what is the characteristic of the mind? The detailed answer is: where does the dharmata have grasper and grasped? Like the characteristic of space, because there is no grasper and grasped. Therefore, the opposite words are spoken, does the mind have grasper and grasped? The detailed answer is: although the mind has grasper and grasped, the dharmata has no grasper and grasped. Therefore, the opposite is also spoken, the previous vow will be broken, because the mind and dharmata are one. If grasper and grasped arise in the mind, then Buddhahood will be attained through effort, because the mind has grasper and grasped. The opposite answer is: if the mind does not exist, that is Buddhahood itself, why do you strive to find it? The detailed answer to this is: do not seek the fruit in the mind, because various things arise in the mind." This is because the mind is a temporary obscuration and the basis for Buddhahood.
