All of them gather into one called "Alaya," which is established as having the same essence, and the four distinctions are established in relation to different negations." "The function is to serve as the basis for past and future habitual patterns, as the cause of actions and afflictions, as the plan for the body and many assemblies, and as the part that connects the body and mind and samsara and nirvana respectively. As it says in the Garland of Pearls: 'Alaya itself is the cause of accumulation.' And so on. The reason for applying the name is that it serves as the connection point for past and future habitual patterns, as the connection for past and future ripening, and as the basis for the power of white and black deeds respectively, so it is called 'all'; and because it is the place where they gather together, it is called 'basis.' As it says in the Root Verses on the Middle Way: 'Therefore, I will briefly explain Alaya, the basis of all that is virtuous and non-virtuous.' And as it says in the commentary on the Uttaratantra: 'Alaya is the basis of all, and it is also the basis of complete purification.' And so on. It is reasonable as the basis of samsara, but how is it the basis of purification? Generally, a basis is called a real basis, like the sun, and a related basis, like virtuous deeds as the basis of higher realms. But this is only nominally established as a related basis. That is, the virtuous deeds of the liberation part that lead to nirvana are the part that is accumulated on the Alaya through the three doors. The deeds of the liberation part, for the part of nirvana, serve as the cause of removing the obscuring defilements, so it is established as the cause of nirvana, but it is not considered as the cause and effect of the producer and the produced. Because the nature of nirvana is unconditioned, it contradicts the view that it is newly created by causes and conditions. As it says in the Uttaratantra: 'Unconditioned and spontaneously accomplished, not realized by other conditions, endowed with knowledge, compassion, and power, possessing two benefits, it is the Buddha.' And so on. Therefore, if one mistakes the place of Alaya and the Dharmakaya as the same basis, believing that 'the defiled awareness, the undefiled Alaya is the Dharmakaya,' it is because of confusion and not distinguishing. Because one does not know the difference in meaning between the same essence and different negations, even if one distinguishes with words, it is useless. As it says in the Six Spaces: 'Therefore, if one does not distinguish between Alaya and Dharmakaya, it is like holding two objects as different awarenesses, and one cannot manifest their respective meanings.' And so on. These two are places where mistakes are easily made.

It is extremely important to distinguish differences with greatness." "Secondly, explaining the distinctions of the Dharmakaya, divided into: Essence, Definition." "Classification, Function, Reason for naming, and five aspects. The essence of the Dharmakaya is the awareness unpolluted by samsara, like the sky. In the 'Abhisamayalankara' it says: The Dharmakaya is free from elaboration, without the characteristic of self-grasping, the essence is emptiness and clarity, inseparable. And in the 'Mani Garland' it says: The Dharmakaya is exhausted of outflows." "Empty and clear, clear and pervasive. Not conceived by thought, memory is clear. Separated from the nature of elaboration, pervasive and empty like the sky. Separated from all self-characteristics." The definition is, in the 'Abhisamayalankara' it says: The definition is, Dharma is the true path, the Kaya is formed from it. So it is said." "If classified, there are three. In the same text it says: The classification is Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya." "Distinguished by the three, thus differences arise." "So it is said. The function is, to purify without defilement through the play of view, meditation, conduct, result, qualities, and activities. In the 'Self-Arisen Wisdom' it says: Unobstructed, unattached, without clinging, is the conduct of the Dharmakaya. Serene, clear, without distraction, is the meditation of the Dharmakaya. Nothing to see, already seen, seeing is complete, is the view of the Dharmakaya. Unmade, unborn, without arising, is the result of the Dharmakaya. Uncultivated, already cultivated, cultivation is complete, is the activity of the Dharmakaya. One arises, two arise, all arise, are the qualities of the Dharmakaya. So it is said. The reason for naming is, for the Kaya of emptiness, things, and without characteristics, the Dharma of qualities of power, fearlessness, and unmixedness are complete, therefore it is called Dharmakaya. In the same text it says: Fearlessness, power, and clarity, all activities are complete, is the definition of the Dharmakaya. So it is said. The Dharmakaya here refers to the fundamental Dharmakaya, naturally pure, characterized by essence, nature, and compassion. In the 'Self-Arisen Wisdom' it says: Essence, nature, and compassion, are the characteristics of the Dharmakaya. So it is said. Secondly, the key to mind and wisdom lies in two: the common classification is a general presentation, and the individual nature is a separate explanation. The first part is divided into: the reality of difference, the fault of not knowing, the way to teach understanding, the essence of the two, the respective places, and five aspects.
