。Numerous forms appear without mind. So it is said. An example to clarify these two is, from Rangshar: "The analogy of the alaya and the dharmakaya is that they arise like the ocean and a boat." This means that the dharmakaya, which is the basis, is like a clear ocean, while the alaya is like a boat, a collection of mind and various consciousnesses, filled with various people, actions, and habitual tendencies, and thus arises from the state of awareness-dharmakaya. However, in some sutras and tantras, the basis is named alaya, and some who do not understand this think that the two are the same. This is a very easy mistake to make, and there are many faults. Because the alaya has habitual tendencies, it would follow that the dharmakaya also has habitual tendencies. Because the alaya needs to be transformed, it would follow that the dharmakaya also needs to be transformed. Because the alaya depends on the phenomena of samsara, it is impermanent, and therefore it would follow that the dharmakaya is also impermanent, and so on. In Rangshar, the contradictory reasoning against the view that the two are the same is presented in the form of questions and answers: "Some say that the alaya is the dharmakaya. To answer and explain this, the definition of the alaya is as follows." Then the answer to it is given: "Because everything is complete, it is the alaya." Then, using questions, it is refuted: "It is reasonable for a Buddha to change, because the alaya manifests various things. Because everything is complete from it, the nature of sentient beings is Buddha. Why is everything complete? Or it will become alternating. Why does it manifest various things? Sometimes it becomes a Buddha, sometimes it becomes a sentient being. Why is there alternation?" and so on. In the All-Good Mind Mirror, it is also said: "To think that the alaya is the dharmakaya is to stray from me." So it is said. So, what should it be? The basis of samsara and nirvana is separated by relying on their differences. In Rangshar, it is said: "The basis of sentient beings and the basis of the Buddha, must be distinguished by one difference." So it is said. Second, the differences are explained separately, divided into two: the differences of the alaya and the differences of the dharmakaya. First, the nature of the alaya, its definition, classification, function, and the reason for its name, are five aspects. Its nature is that it is closely gathered by mind and mental factors, and therefore it is the karma of samsara and nirvana.

I have become the basis of all habits, the place of ignorance, and am of an unspecified nature. It is said in the scriptures: "The essence is the vessel of all habits." Also, as it says in "Self-Arisen": "The Alaya consciousness is deluded by various kinds of knowledge from the grasping of conceptualization. The Alaya is an object of ignorance." The definition is: Because it is the basis of many habits, it is the Alaya. It is said in the scriptures: "The definition is that all are gathered, the basis is assembled and accumulated." There are four types: The Alaya in the original sense is the ignorance related to wisdom that arises together with wisdom from the very beginning, like gold and dross, and is the first basis of all phenomena of samsara. The Alaya in the sense of combination is the basis of the place of karma, the fundamental support that combines and projects karma and each in samsara and nirvana, and has an unspecified nature. The Alaya of various habits is the place where the cycle of mind and mental factors arises, and the latent part of various karmic habits has an unspecified nature. The Alaya of the habitual body is the basis of the appearance of the gross body, which appears as limbs and branches, and minute parts, as well as the pure and luminous body, and the three bodies that appear like meditation, each appearing separately, and has the place of the support of ignorance. It is said in the scriptures: "The classification includes body and combination, various and original basis." Some people think that the Alaya is established from the part of the wisdom object with defilements, but since there is a fault of mixing with Dharma, it is reasonable to establish it only as habit. These are also the consciousness of ignorance, unspecified, and the place of habits, only with different aspects. That is to say, the basis of habits in the body becomes the Alaya, so the key to the appearance of the body now lies in this. The basis of habits in the mind becomes the Alaya, so now it appears as a collection of various consciousnesses, as well as mental factors. The basis of various habits becomes the Alaya, so now it appears as various different appearances and radiance. The original basis becomes the Alaya, so now it is in accordance with ignorance in everything. These four Alayas are all unspecified in the latent part, so like seeds underground, they are actually invisible. They are only the cause of the manifested phenomena, and the four ignorances of body, mind, and appearance are like sprouts, which are actually visible, and the key lies in this.
