The refutation of "being" comes from the Madhyamakāvatāra: If it arises from itself, there is no merit. It is unreasonable for something that has already arisen to arise again. This means that the internal sense bases such as the eye, which originally exist, are merely unclear, existing as the cause, and are manifested by conditions, that is all, it is the result. Regarding this statement, because it originally exists, production is meaningless, thus stating the reductio ad absurdum that collects contradictions. If it is recognized that although the result exists in the cause, production is meaningful, and this is not contradictory, then the pervasion is not established. Then, even if it originally exists when it is unclear, even when it is clearly manifest at the time of production, it must be produced. Just as it does not need to be produced, even if it originally exists when it is unclear, it does not need to be produced, thus making it equal. If it is distinguished by saying that it is pervasive that the obvious being does not need to be produced, but it is not pervasive that the unclear being does not need to be produced. Then, this pervasion is the same as what is to be proven, just as the existence of the result in the cause is not established for us. This difference is also not established. Thus preventing production from oneself. Furthermore, Buddhists believe that smoke arises from fire, not from smoke itself, therefore admitting production from another, and also considering the other as the producer. Flame does not arise from darkness, regarding these two views, if another arises from another, then darkness should also arise from flame. If darkness does not arise from flame, then it is also unreasonable for another smoke to arise from another fire, because both of these being others is the same. This is the reductio ad absurdum that collects contradictions, that is, the Madhyamakāvatāra says: If another arises relying on another, then thick darkness will also arise from flame. When saying this, if it is recognized that the pervasion is not established, then just as darkness does not arise from flame other than darkness, it is also not possible for smoke to arise from fire other than smoke, just as smoke arises from fire other than smoke, darkness should also arise from flame other than darkness, thus making it equal, thereby establishing the pervasion. If it is said in an easy-to-understand way, flame is the subject, darkness should arise, because darkness other than you, and also because you other than darkness are also others. If it is said that because the flame different from smoke has the ability to produce smoke, it produces smoke, while the flame different from darkness does not have the ability to produce darkness, so it does not produce. Then, this difference needs to be proven.

Just as we do not accept production from others, the difference that fire has the ability to produce smoke, but the flame does not have the ability to produce darkness, is also not established. Therefore, production from others is refuted. Similarly, since there are both faults, production from both is refuted. Furthermore, the Tirthikas assert that things arise without cause, and they assert that the scent of a sky lotus does not arise because it is imperceptible. This is also refuted in the same way. As it says in that very text: If beings were to become empty of causes, then like the scent of a sky lotus, it would be imperceptible. Because worldly people perceive what is extremely bright, therefore the world is from causes. If one admits arising from no cause, then since the world is without cause, the various bright things must be imperceptible, which is a reductio ad absurdum that gathers contradictions. If it is realized that the pervasion is not established, even if the world is without cause, bright things still appear, then the scent of a sky lotus, even if it is without cause, must appear in manifestation, which is establishing the pervasion with an equal attitude. If someone thinks that even if they are the same in being without cause, the world appears because it has essence, but the scent of a sky lotus does not appear because it has no essence, if one wants to distinguish this difference, then this difference is the same as the view that needs to be established. Just as we do not accept arising from no cause, the difference that the world has essence and the scent of a sky lotus has no essence is also not established. Therefore, in this way, production from non-existence is prevented, and all established views are refuted by reductio ad absurdum, and the tenet of elaboration from oneself is not accepted. As it says in the *Refutation of Debate*: If I have some vows, then I will have these faults. Because I have no vows, I am only without fault. And as it says in the *Four Hundred Stanzas*: For one in whom there is no পক্ষ of existence, non-existence, or both, even after a long time, no fault can be stated. And as it says in the *Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning*: If there is acceptance of things, then from the arising of desire and hatred, endless evil views will arise, from which disputes will arise, that is the root of all evil views, without it, afflictions
