Because it is established by arising and ceasing, etc., from past causes and results. If it is said that it changes as if it has meaning, that is not the case. Because those with meaning grasp external gross appearances, such as atoms, as other. We are those who consider the habitual patterns that appear in the mind to be like the appearances of errors such as Datura, etc., which are neither internal nor external, and are not established anywhere. However, we say that it is without inherent existence because we want appearances that appear even though they do not exist to be without a basis or root. Therefore, it is very important to distinguish between appearance and the object of appearance. Now, from the three appearances, I will explain the actions of grasping and apprehending. In this way, conceptual thoughts of grasping arise from objects, and conceptual thoughts of apprehending arise from meaning. The body is the receptacle and support for afflictions. Ignorant people cling to it as real, so they constantly wander. Clinging to appearances as objects causes the conceptual thought of grasping to arise. When one abides single-mindedly within the eight aggregates and appears outwardly, the conceptual thought of apprehending arises, calling it "mind." The body is the support for the arising of grasping and apprehending, and it is the place where harm from pleasure and pain is manifestly accomplished. Because one clings to the three appearances as real, one constantly wanders in existence and suffers. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by the Ruler of the Land: "Among all phenomena, there is not a single inherent nature, like illusions, mirages, and reflections of the moon in water. The ignorant cling to them as real, so they are bound and entangled, constantly turning like a potter's wheel." It is said like this. Now, although the beginningless samsara is like an image, as long as grasping and apprehended have not dissolved into the expanse, one should cherish the cause and effect. Although all of these are non-existent in reality, due to the power of grasping and apprehended, dependent origination appears like an illusion. As long as grasping and apprehended have not dissolved into the expanse, there is the karma of cause and effect, which is the emanation of that. Thus, in relation to the ultimate truth of the nature of reality, there is no samsara or the karma that produces samsara, but in conventional truth, samsara appears like an illusion based on the dependent arising of karma from its own causes and conditions. Therefore, one must practice its cause and effect. When all the conceptual thoughts of grasping and apprehended have dissolved into the expanse, there is no karma, because ignorance, which is the cause, along with its habitual patterns, has been extinguished. Until that is realized, there is karma, because ignorance and
