The collection is called the body. Because of separation and leaving remnants, it is also called the body. Although the gods have no remnants left, in terms of separation from it, it is also called the body." "What are the separate appearances of body, meaning, and place? Or it is enough for everything to appear as place, or it is enough for meaning and body to appear alone. If you think so, it is not. To establish the rationality of separate appearances, like this, on the basis of Alaya, there are three kinds of habitual tendencies. Established from beginningless time, due to habit, it appears like this in all lifetimes. Because Alaya has three different habitual tendencies, therefore, due to its power, three appearances also arise in the way of appearance, just like different sprouts arise from three different seeds. No matter where it arises, as long as the habitual tendencies are not exhausted, it will appear like this, just like the body, mind, and place appear in a dream. The difference of previous habitual tendencies is that the previous generations are produced by beginningless habitual tendencies, and due to its continuous habit, this life is produced, just like daytime produces dreams. From the continuation of the habitual tendencies of this life, the body, meaning, and place of the future life appear. These principles are stated in the Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutras: "Three kinds of three kinds of appearances." It means that because three kinds of habitual tendencies are established on the Alaya, three different appearances appear, which is what the Bodhisattva Maitreya taught. Now, to refute the wrong discriminations of those who are far from the eye of much learning, far from the principles of the supreme vehicle, and prejudiced. The ignorant all say that everything is mind! They are very ignorant of the meaning of the three appearances. There are many faults, they confuse each other, and are very excessive." "Abandon the evil sects of those who promote them!" Those who do not understand the principles of the Great Vehicle arrogantly say that all of samsara and nirvana, inner and outer vessels and contents are their own minds, and it seems that they are deceiving many beings. In this way, they also do not understand the meaning of the three appearances stated in the Great Vehicle Sutras. The habitual tendencies established in the mind are mind, but how can the habitual tendencies established in the body and place be mind? If so, there are many faults, just like the body and appearance can be seen with the eyes and are established as tangible objects, will the mind also become like that? Or like the mind, can the body and place not be seen and heard?

The mind has color, shape, and perceptions such as seeing and hearing. When one becomes a Buddha or falls into a lower realm, all appearances change accordingly. When many appearances share the same object, consciousness becomes one. When appearances cease, the mind changes accordingly. Earth, water, fire, and wind become sentient beings, which can be used to refute the Samkhya school of non-Buddhists. If they are confused with each other, just as one's own cognitive field is, external objects should also become self-cognizant, and one's own mind should be outside, because appearances reside outside. Appearances should be within oneself, because the mind is clear and aware within. It is unreasonable for the object of appearance to be outside and self-awareness to be inside, appearing as two different things, because one entity cannot have two parts. It's too extreme to say that from the time one is not born, one's mind should already exist in this place. Because this appearance has been in this place since before one was born, and when one dies, the appearances of this place, such as the land, should disappear, and when one goes elsewhere, this appearance should also move there, because this is one's mind, and the mind follows one's movements. Or, when one goes elsewhere, one's mind should remain in this place, because this appearance remains. There are countless such faults, so one should abandon the bad ways of those who are foolish and ignorant like cowherds. "Whatever appears is of such nature." And, "O sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind." And, "The mind disturbed by habitual tendencies, manifests various things." Since it is said like that, isn't it the mind? The answer is: This is said in terms of the difference between appearance and the object of appearance. It should be understood that appearance is mind, because clinging to appearance and non-appearance is one's own mind. Saying that appearance is mind is intended to prevent the Theravada and other schools from clinging to some externalist view as true, not to say that mountains and so on are mind. One should understand that the clinging appearance that conceptually distinguishes things like mountains is understood as mind. Therefore, the object of appearance, such as mountains, is not mind, because it is different from mind.
