The signs are the muscles of the body twitching, throbbing like needles, and the occurrence of sounds like the chirping of sparrows, emptiness, and a feeling of unnaturalness. The need is: there is a need to become proficient in the selflessness of the aggregates. There are also two ways to soften and enter the path: softening the mind, which involves setting up an object of focus in front, stringing together a rosary of HŪṂ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हूं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽), or wrapping it like a rope, and then gradually extending outward, holding the mind and reciting HŪṂ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हूं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) melodiously. The signs are: awareness abiding steadily and being able to focus on any object. The need is that when actually practicing the main practice, one gains independence of awareness, so there is a need to be able to transform the focus to anywhere. Entering the path involves: like an ant crawling, on a long road, as far as the eye can see, constantly entering HŪṂ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हूं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) and going forward, looking at the back of the mountain ridge, and going to the places that have been gone to before, then looking at the valley stream pointing east, indicating the west side of the ridge, going through narrow and frightening forest canyons and flowing rivers, thinking that there is only one HŪṂ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हूं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) going in the endlessness, and reciting HŪṂ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हूं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) long and melodiously. The signs are: a feeling of manifest weariness, feeling relaxed, and the arising of non-conceptual samadhi. The need is to bring awareness to its peak. Thus, doing the preliminary practice of speech has two needs: common and supreme. The common is: reversing the attachment to speech, pacifying the obstacles of speech, and the commonality of these two is purifying the sins of speech. The supreme need is: speech not falling into samsara, speech being liberated in the sambhogakaya, and the commonality of these two is the need to become inseparable from the speech of all Buddhas. The third is the preliminary practice of mind, which is divided into the explanation of the key points of the instructions and the actual preliminary practice. First, it is divided into: what is the main thing, contemplating examples, and examining one and different. The first is: among these three, body, speech, and mind, what is the main thing? Examining which is more important when doing what. Recognizing that the doer of everything is the mind is grasping the root, recognizing all the demons of the mind. As it says in the scripture: Mind is the chief, mind is very swift, mind goes to the head of all dharmas. Just like that. The second is examining what is similar to what from the elements.

Although not seen as an object of focus, it flows without ceasing. Realizing it as being like the wind because of its appearing and appearing is knowing the example of the four characteristics. As it says in the Sound Tantra: "Consciousness is like the wind." Like that. Third, does it appear to external objects? Whatever you contemplate is fine, but at that time, are the mind and the object one or different? If they are one, then like the mind, the object should not become something to be seen, etc. If like the object, the mind should also become seeing, hearing, etc. Likewise, are body, speech, and mind three, one or different? If they are one, then they mix with each other, and the characteristics become confused. If they are different, then where does the mind become different? Also, contemplate indivisible atoms and indivisible moments, and contemplate them as different and one. Then, realizing that there is no one or different, one sees the meaning that all phenomena are non-dual. As the scripture says: "The realm of formations and the nature of ultimate reality are the nature of being separate from one and different. Those who contemplate one and different are those who have entered into improper views." And: "One is also deceived by the mind. Many are also deceived by the mind." Like that. The first two of these three objects of focus are the birth Dharma of the holy guru, and the latter is the agreement to demolish the house of the mind, which is mentioned in the postscript of Vimalamitra's Trekchö, and is established here as an indispensable profound key point. The actual preliminary is: In the overturning it says: "The mind is the place where it first arises, the place where it stays in the middle, and the place where it goes in the end. Thus, by examining the mind, the mind is purified and the true nature of the mind is known." Based on this, in the three methods of examination, the first is to examine the place of origin and the one who originates. Is this mind like the wind born from external appearances? Or is it born from the internal aggregates? What is the mind itself like? As it appears to reason, divide it into indivisible atoms. Where is the place of origin? Also, examine the mind in indivisible moments, and examine how the one who originates is. Then, realize that the mind is unborn, rootless, and empty. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize the Nirmanakaya. Now, examine the place where it stays and the one who stays. Where does this arising of thoughts and concepts stay now, in the outer, inner, or middle? Examine it as before. Then, realize that it is without a place to stay and without support. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize the Sambhogakaya. Finally, examine the place where it goes and the one who goes.
