In the absence of a path, the realm of appearances is vivid like daylight, even when all have fallen asleep. For each of the senses, appearances are mixed with sleep and clarity, and one abides in a state of non-grasping. Fourth, to sever the clinging to habitual tendencies, one trains in sessions of meditation: Do not deliberately abandon what exists. Do not deliberately seek what does not exist. Do not be overly attached to what exists. Do not worry about what does not exist. Do not be attached to praise or blame. Use appearances and sounds as illusory. Do not cut off the traces of past thoughts. Do not welcome the future. Do not impose partiality of acceptance or rejection on present awareness. Maintain ordinary consciousness in its natural state, free from fabrication or distortion. Appearances are liberated in the moment of appearing. Like recognizing the nature of dreams and thus liberating fear, or like recognizing the nature of a ghost and thus entering self-liberation without grasping, one trains. Awareness is liberated in its own place. Like reflections appearing in a mirror without clinging to their own characteristics, one trains in the inseparability of appearance and liberation. Appearances and mind merge into one, like salt dissolving in water. Knowing that the taste is the same and without distinction, one trains in the emptiness of grasping at objects and mind, the primordial nature of reality. In this way, habitual tendencies are self-liberated, becoming like the traceless flight of a bird in the sky. At that time, the instantaneous, transparent awareness abides without the continuation of habitual tendencies. Third, the realization attained through this method is called establishing phenomena on the ground. At that time, without abandoning any of the phenomena encompassed by appearances, the external world, and the mind, one establishes them in the state of the primordial nature of reality, without fabrication, hope, or fear, abiding like an ocean undisturbed by the wind. At that time, the three experiences of physical ease, clear speech, and non-conceptual mind naturally arise from within, and one abides in the wheel of primordial bliss and the nature of reality, as free as a clear flowing river. This is the time of attaining the realization of natural ease and wisdom. The third meaning, concerning the yoga of continuous practice, also has three aspects. First, identifying the nature of practice: it is how the nature of view and meditation exists in equipoise, and how it is mixed and brought forth in post-meditation. Among these, practice is the main support for view and meditation to reach the essential point. Therefore, one should practice in sequence those practices that benefit one's own experience, and do so in connection with time.

There are three ways to become accustomed to these methods. First, the conduct of a beginner is: abandoning all non-virtue and its causes, and increasing all virtue and its causes. The yogi should also know what to accept and reject, and go to a supreme lama. By listening, one knows what is Dharma and what is not Dharma. By listening to the complete and profound instructions, one cuts off the additions and subtractions of words. By thinking, one makes sure that the meaning is not mistaken, and does not miss the key points. One trains in the methods of turning the mind away from samsara. Second, the conduct of diligently taking the essence is: then, one goes to an unfamiliar place, and like a beggar or a wild animal, one practices the lama's instructions alone, being content with poor food and clothing. One does not regard other instructions as marvelous, but trusts in one's own instructions. One completely transforms all actions, efforts, and practices, along with the attachments of this life, and becomes patient. First, by the conduct of distinguishing between samsara and nirvana, one reverses the attachment to body, speech, and mind. Then, without associating with anyone, one cuts off speech with the conduct of being like a mute. Without making any signs, one releases the six senses with the conduct of being like a young child, and meditates on the meaning of dharmata. Third, the conduct of awakening the path of asceticism is: then, one forces oneself to endure what one cannot endure, forcibly cutting off the bonds of the mind. Without cleanliness or impurity, one abandons the attachment to acceptance and rejection with the conduct of being like a dog or a pig. And with the conduct of being like a madman, without coming or going, without stopping, one does not restrain awareness, but practices openly, so that all appearances arise as friends. Then, when one is able to transform the disbelief of others, able to revive the dead, and able to control the four elements, in order to cut off the latent habits of attachment, one also practices the asceticism of awareness in marketplaces and other places. At the same time, inner afflictions are cut off, and outer appearances are brought under control. Such conduct is named: the conduct of freely transforming appearances. Third, the realization attained through these methods is: it also first transforms from ordinariness, and by making one's own mindstream conform to the Dharma, one becomes peaceful and subdued, entering into the abandonment of afflictions, and generating strong renunciation and weariness. Second, whatever appears is self-liberated.
