It is necessary to do so. First, if we examine something like a house, initially we grasp the house as a single whole. This is because we haven't examined it. If we examine it, the so-called house is by nature composed of many things such as stones, bricks, walls, and lumber. When these components are dismantled separately, the mind that clings to the house is reversed, and it clings to stones and earth, and so on. Since even a stone is accumulated from many particles, if something like a single stone is first divided into four parts, the clinging to it as one is reversed. Then, if something like a quarter part is also divided into four parts, the clinging to one side of the quarter part is reversed. Even that single part within it is divided into parts. Since the parts become devoid of inherent existence, therefore, the Heart Sutra says, "Form is emptiness." If we do not examine and analyze in this way, then the appearance of things like houses, arising from emptiness, which is nothing at all, without the cessation of dependent origination, is what is called, "Emptiness is form." Appearance eliminates the extreme of existence. Emptiness eliminates the extreme of non-existence. Emptiness is not other than form. Form is also not other than emptiness. Therefore, cultivate the definite understanding that emptiness and dependent origination are inseparable, again and again. For something like one's own tent, initially, one also clings to it as a single tent. However, when the door and the back (the back flap of the tent) are separated, the clinging to it as one is reversed, and one clings to "this is the door" and "this is the back." When those are separated one by one, the clinging to the door and back is reversed, and one clings to the ropes. If the ropes are separated into strands, the clinging to the ropes is reversed, and one clings to the strands. If the strands are separated into individual fibers, the clinging to the strands is reversed from the individual hairs. The hairs are also divided into parts of particles. By establishing that the parts are without inherent existence, and analyzing in this way, one derives the definite understanding of the union of appearance and emptiness through the reasoning of the fourfold combination of emptiness: form is emptiness, and emptiness is form; emptiness is not other than form, and form is not other than emptiness. In this way, examine everything from mountains, continents, fences, and gardens to golden mountains, pleasure lakes, Mount Meru, and so on. Then, it is necessary to examine one's own internal aggregates. Now, because one clings to "this single body of mine" as being single, permanent, and independent, it is necessary to examine and analyze this. If one thinks, "Is my body permanent?", it is not, because initially the sperm and egg of the parents are only one-tenth the size of a white mustard seed, and then gradually increase.
