It is necessary to understand that if there is birth, then death is a natural law. Because impermanence is subject to death, one must realize that there is no meaning or value in pursuing this life, and one must strive for the next life. By contemplating the cause and effect of samsara, one must develop renunciation towards future cycles of existence. Regarding how to develop renunciation: A person of small capacity renounces the three lower realms and seeks higher realms. A person of intermediate capacity renounces the six realms of samsara and seeks liberation. Although other guiding methods do not have these two, in the tradition of the omniscient father and son, one must renounce the thought of self-interest and self-cherishing. That is, when contemplating the faults of samsara, the mind feels pain, sadness, and sorrow. When the thought of wanting to be liberated from it arises, what good is it if only I alone am liberated? Leaving behind the kind mothers who have cared for us since beginningless time, and achieving liberation alone, there is no one more shameless than that. Therefore, one must think of enabling all sentient beings to attain the state of Buddhahood, which is the great mind of definite emergence from the two extremes. If we establish four types of renunciation, then the motivation of a person of small capacity is merely renunciation. The renunciation of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers are two types, and the great renunciation is the fourth. If we consider it from the perspective of three types of renunciation, then the Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Bodhisattvas are the three types of renunciation. Now, one must definitely renounce all of samsara and seek a place to escape. Therefore, one must strive for liberation and the state of omniscience. One cannot know the path to liberation on one's own. Parents, relatives, etc., will not show it, and even if they do, one will not understand. Therefore, one must seek a virtuous friend. However, it will not work with just anyone one encounters. Therefore, one must rely on a qualified lama and virtuous friend by serving them in the three ways that please them, and one must learn their thoughts and conduct. Among these, the first is the guidance on the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments, etc. There are two types: ripening instructions and aspiration instructions. Although there are only aspiration instructions at present, until the great Vidyadhara Jigme Lingpa ('jigs med gling pa), there were methods that could substitute for ripening instructions. Therefore, the first is the guidance on the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments, which is the guidance on one's own body. On this basis of leisure and endowment, there are only two paths to take. If it is good, this body is the ship of liberation.

Therefore, if one practices the pure Dharma on this body, one can begin with happiness and joy, and attain the state of liberation and omniscience. In particular, if one meditates on the Great Perfection of Clear Light, one will be liberated in any of the three: this life, the bardo, or the future life. If one does wrong, this body is the cornerstone of samsara. Therefore, if one pursues worldly life on this body, it will become the source of all fear and suffering. Like this, one has no obstacles to practicing Dharma and has leisure, so this called "leisure" is one's own body, therefore, its opposite has eight unfree states, these eight are called the eight unfree states of self-continuum and basis. Among them are four non-human unfree states and four human unfree states. First, for the non-human unfree states, one must repeatedly think about whether one has the leisure to practice Dharma by contemplating hell. This has two: sessions and session breaks. Regarding sessions, there are many ways, such as two, three, four, and six sessions, but here we consider two sessions during the day and two or four sessions at night. To make it easier for beginners to enter, start a session in the morning as soon as you hear the first bird call, the dawn session until it is not light, and end the session after dawn, the session break until the sun rises high, during the session break, perform water offerings and white offerings, and continuously recite the yidam deities. Then start a session, the morning session until the sun is overhead. Then end the session, eat lunch, prostrate, read books, etc., and rest leisurely in the afternoon before the shadows become long. Then start a session, the evening session until the sun sets. Then end the session, recite tea offerings and dedications, and red offerings. Then, in the evening called "black face of night," when you see a person, you can only recognize that it is a person, but you cannot recognize who it is, start a session, this is the dusk session. Then, end the session when people are about to sleep, these are the four sessions. During these four times, the mind is easy to tame if you meditate. During the session breaks, even if beginners meditate, it is difficult to grasp the key points, especially prone to the faults of dullness and agitation, so during the session breaks, one should strive to recite and do good deeds, and relax meditation. Like this, each session has three parts: the preliminary, the main part, and the concluding part, first the preliminary.
