Common Outer Preliminaries. Common Outer Preliminaries. First: The difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment. Here, firstly, the instructions on preliminaries are twofold: common and uncommon. Here, firstly, explaining the common preliminaries, the term "preliminary" is like tilling the field first, one must tame one's mind-stream with the common preliminaries in order to engage in the actual practice. Among these, the common outer preliminaries ripen oneself, while the uncommon refuge and so on, are like planting crops until threshing, which is uncommon. Enjoying the grain is like the actual instructions. Among these, there are two: ripening instructions and aspirational instructions. The first is based on Vimala's bone script, in fragmented form, following the tradition of fragmented pith instructions, and gradual practice. The former is like the master Kumārarāja, the Omniscient Dharma King (Kunmkhyen Choskyi Gyalpo) who relied on him for six years and completed the instructions, and the disciples simultaneously attained the end of the path, that is, the exhaustion of the nature of the Great Omniscient Primordial Purity (Ka-dag) and the perfection of the spontaneously present awareness. The Great Omniscient One made a testament, saying, "In the future, those who follow me must rely on the master for a long time and listen to the pith instructions for a long time." It is like leaving a will in the ocean of liberation. If it is not like that, but names such as aspirational instructions, seven-day instructions, and one-month instructions are given, the master pretends to give instructions like a horse race, and the disciples just listen casually, like sticking out the tongue before the head is cooked, or stretching the legs before the seat is warm. The master has no time to train the disciples, and the disciples have no time to rely on the master, just shouting "actual practice, actual practice," and if the foundation of the preliminaries is lost, it is like sewing from a high place, and eventually it will break at a low place. In the end, those who pretend to be practitioners are inconsistent in word and deed, contradictory inside and out, their minds and the sacred Dharma go in separate directions, their body postures are artificial, and their eyes are restless. Such people have no progress in their minds at all. Here, instead of ripening instructions, based on the tradition of gradual practice of pith instructions, there are three: common outer preliminaries, uncommon inner preliminaries, and the near path transference instructions as a part of the actual practice. First, what is meant by "common," and with whom is it common? According to the scriptures, it refers to all

Because these are common objects of contemplation, they are the common outer preliminaries. According to the oral tradition, the common objects of contemplation for all three types of individuals, and so on. When we say "uncommon," who is it uncommon with? According to the scriptures, it is not common with the worldly paths and the Hinayana paths of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. According to the oral tradition, it is not common with the lower and intermediate individuals, because the objects of contemplation of the great individual are not common, so it is called the uncommon inner preliminary. Transference of consciousness is for those who are deficient in their practice of the path, using transference to welcome them. Therefore, initially, there is no time to practice the main practice, and even if they have practiced, they do not have the warmth of the three states of birth, death, and bardo, and they have not attained a stable path. Therefore, they must rely on transference to continue the practice of the path, so the decisive transference, which is a component of the main practice of the completion stage, belongs to the six dharmas. Among them, the first is the common outer preliminary, which is divided into six parts. First, the four thoughts that turn the mind away from samsara, or the four transformations, which are the four factors that turn the mind away from the thoughts of this life and the next, and from the selfish clinging to the thought of benefiting others with bodhicitta. The difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments and the impermanence of life turn the mind away from the thought of accomplishing this life. The faults of samsara and the law of karma turn the mind away from the thoughts and actions of accomplishing samsara in the next life. Consequently, one must turn the mind away from the thoughts and actions of accomplishing selfish desires, which is a characteristic of the omniscient father and son. Turning the mind away from the three thoughts and actions of accomplishing this life, the next life, and selfish desires, one must seek liberation, and therefore contemplate the benefits of liberation. The path to liberation cannot be shown by just anyone, only a qualified lama and spiritual friend can guide one, so one must know the methods of relying on a spiritual friend. First, the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments, one must learn the ways of listening to instructions, and so on. The way of listening to instructions, first is the way of listening when listening, the way of practicing when practicing, the way of meditating when meditating, so one must have a vast intention for this, such as the intention of bodhicitta, vast means, and so on, which are intention and action. First, intention is the main thing, and second, the actions of body, speech, and mind are the main thing. First, when we say intention, "kun" means many, so it is to arouse a special thought from among many thoughts.
