If one meditates excessively, one will mostly go to the animal realm, as it is said. Such motivation must be abandoned; if one is attached to samsara, it is not renunciation, as it is said. Secondly, the motivation of a middling person is: seeing the six realms of existence as the nature of suffering, the wheel of suffering like a pit of fire, like a Rakshasa island, like the edge of a razor. One liberates oneself from the six realms of samsara, and in order to attain the peaceful state of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer, no matter how long the path one takes, it does not become a near, quick path to attaining the state of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer Arhat, but becomes a cause for attaining Buddhahood. When the Incomparable Jowo Rinpoche was residing in Tibet, he had tea early in the morning, and when Gyaltsa Dromtonpa was in front of him, he said, "Ah kha kha." When asked, "What is it?" he said, "In India, there is a student of mine practicing Hevajra, and this morning he has entered the path of obstructing Hearers." When Dromtonpa asked, "How has Hevajra entered the path of obstructing Hearers?" he said, "If one does not know how to practice with the thought of an individual, Hevajra will throw one into hell, throw one into the preta realm, throw one into the animal realm, and also throw one into the state of a Buddha. Therefore, compared to the Dharma being practiced, the way of practicing or the thought is more important." Therefore, it is said that if one is attached to self-interest, it is not bodhicitta. It is also said that no matter the high or low status in future lives, saying "I am not afraid of death, I am not confused," and meditating like this, all comes down to the motivation being the thought of accomplishing self-interest. Thirdly, the motivation of a great person is: the following four all come down to the intention of pursuing oneself and accomplishing self-interest, therefore, from this day on, regard the intention of pursuing oneself and accomplishing self-interest as an enemy, regard it as a fault, and refute it. Not for oneself, but in order to liberate all sentient beings from the two, cause and effect, of suffering, not abiding in the two extremes, to attain the state of a fully enlightened Buddha, such a thought is the vast bodhicitta. In order to generate it in the continuum, one must meditate on recognizing one's mother, remembering kindness, etc. Otherwise, the lama also says things like "like the sky is pervasive," etc., and the student also just thinks about it, and both become dizzy, saying "Awa re," and both are empty and meaningless.

Those who pretend to be lamas and disciples nowadays often lack even good intentions, let alone other virtues. This situation is very likely to occur. Therefore, one must first recognize the kindness of one's own old mother, remember her kindness, want to repay her kindness, and want to place her in the state of omniscient Buddhahood. Now, the broader thought is the essence of bodhicitta. Having two aspects or two meanings is the essence of bodhicitta. As Maitreya said, "The arising of the mind is for the sake of others, desiring perfect and complete Buddhahood." Therefore, the first aspect or the first meaning is to focus on sentient beings with compassion, that is, to wish all sentient beings to be free from suffering and its causes; the second aspect or the second meaning is to focus on perfect enlightenment with wisdom, that is, one must think of attaining the state of perfect Buddhahood. If it is not mixed with compassion, even if one thinks of benefiting sentient beings, but does not generate the thought of placing them in the state of Buddhahood, it is only compassion; if one thinks of attaining the state of Buddhahood, but does not think of benefiting sentient beings, it is only loving-kindness, and it will not be more special. Therefore, wishing all sentient beings to be free from suffering and its causes, and thinking of attaining the state of perfect Buddhahood, this is bodhicitta. So, when practicing this mind, what should one do? First, one should contemplate one's own root mother, and then gradually contemplate it to pervade the end of space. First, like this, how vast is space, how vast are sentient beings; how vast are sentient beings, how vast are the suffering of karma and appearances. All sentient beings pervaded by the suffering of karma and appearances, from beginningless time, there is not a single sentient being who has not been one's own parents and relatives. Among these sentient beings, there is not a single sentient being who has not been one's own mother. When they were mothers, there was not a single sentient being who did not raise oneself with great kindness. Just like the present mother, countless times she has been one's own mother, because I have been wandering in samsara from beginningless time until now, so on a piece of land the size of a palm, there is no place where I have not been born and died many times, except for hell and most of the heavens, there is no place where one is not born through a mother, and it cannot be determined that a single sentient being has not been one's own mother, so all sentient beings have been one's own mother, not just once, but countless times, one must recognize the end of the mother, etc.
