For practice, there are two types of preliminaries: the preliminary of preliminaries and the preliminary itself. The preliminary of preliminaries involves: blowing the nose, washing the face, and taking care of all necessary tasks inside and outside the door. In short, it means ensuring that one does not have to run around during the session. Then, relax the body and mind, sit comfortably on the bed, and rest. Then, make a firm resolution that, even if a kind father were to appear during this session, one would not be distracted by the affairs of the session. Make a strong vow that even if one were to be killed, one would not be swayed. The preliminary of the session involves the seven points of posture: legs in the vajra posture, hands in meditative equipoise, spine straight like an arrow, shoulders relaxed and extended, neck slightly bent, tongue touching the palate, and eyes lowered to the tip of the nose – these are the seven points. The point of speech is to clear the breath, alternating three times on the left and right, or all together three times, for a total of nine times; or once on the right, once on the left, and once together, for a total of three times; or all together three times, for a total of three times – do whichever you prefer. Then, press the left hand, formed into a vajra fist, against the root of the thigh. With the right hand, form the vajra three-pointed mudra, block the right nostril, and slowly inhale through the left nostril, tightening below the navel. Visualize that from beginningless samsara, all the karma, afflictions, sins, obscurations, broken vows, breaches of commitments, meditation faults, dullness, agitation, and the three types of obscurations that one has accumulated transform into a black cloud, thinking that it is scattering outwards. When exhaling, exhale like a grain, first small, then growing larger, and finally exhaling in a long, thin stream. This is like washing a container. The third is the point of mind, correcting the motivation. What is the purpose of this session of practice? Is it the motivation to seek refuge in order to pacify illnesses and other problems in this life? Is it the good intention to gain fame, profit, and praise? If it is either of these two, abandon them like poison. If it is uncertain, correct it. The motivation of a small person is the thought of an old worldly person, not the thought of someone like me who has entered the path. The motivation of a middling person is also the thought of fulfilling one's own desires, so that too should be abandoned. Now, the motivation of a great person is that all sentient beings may be separated from suffering and its causes, and may attain the state of perfect and complete enlightenment.

Should be obtained. For that purpose, I must generate the pure intention to meditate on the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment. The method of praying to the Lama is: On the crown of one's head, visualize a white lotus flower with a hundred thousand petals in full bloom, with red and yellow stamens radiating light, upon which is a lion throne, and upon that a silk cushion, the root Lama appearing in the form of a monastic or a mantra practitioner, knowing the Lama to be the Buddha, pray with the five recognitions, reciting "All Buddhas of the three times..." etc., and the beginning and end verses of the four thoughts that turn the mind from samsara, praying with fervent devotion, the Lama dissolves into light with great compassion and merges into oneself, remaining in a state where the Lama and one's mind are inseparable, not following after the past, not welcoming the future, not continuing the thoughts of the present, but resting in the natural state. These are the preliminaries of the session. In the main practice, first meditate on the eight freedoms, and among the four non-human unfree states, the first is hell, meditating on the four aspects of hell: the place, the body, the suffering, and the lifespan. The place is a place of darkness, blackness, and obscurity. All the ground is burning iron ground, like the flames of coal, where even a place to put an ordinary clod of earth cannot be found. Burning mountains of black smoke flames, one cubit high. Above, a rain of arrows, burning stones, and weapons falls. The body is: four times larger than the people of Jambudvipa, the body color is like blood, or like black cotton fluff floating, or like a newborn prince with thin skin. The muscles are tight. Very clear, like the eyes, unable to bear touch. The hair stands on end. Three corners of the eyes. Body hair stands on end, limbs are coarse. The belly is large, like an angry one, if the people of Jambudvipa were to see such hell beings, they would faint. The suffering is that there is no rest day or night, without day or night, being cut by weapons, burned by the ground and rain of burning stones, etc., without any opportunity for happiness, this is suffering. The lifespan is that one must experience eons beyond the number of years. The place of the cold hells is among ice mountains and glaciers, with blizzards raging. The body is the same as the hot hells. The suffering is cold
