Because there is no land. At that time, even if the harmer is not a sinner, even if the people of Jambudvipa become enemies, a single gray arrow will not be shot. Except for the sacred Dharma, even if one possesses the wealth of Jambudvipa, one has no right to take even a needle and thread. Therefore, the sacred Dharma is the protector and refuge, the continent, the army, the friend, the light, and the lamp. Therefore, one must now cultivate a Dharma that is beneficial at the time of death. Regarding this, the small person should know that the three lower realms are suffering, and with the thought of seeking the rank of gods and humans, cultivate the three things that accumulate merit, so that the small person can accomplish the Dharma of death in his own way. However, the middle and great persons cannot accomplish the Dharma of death in either way. The middle person should know that the three realms of sentient beings in samsara are suffering, and starting from the mind of renunciation that only wants to liberate oneself, with the thought of wanting to attain liberation, cultivate the three excellent trainings, so that the middle person can accomplish the Dharma of death, but cannot accomplish the Dharma of death of the great person. The great person should start from the perspective of altruistic bodhicitta, and cultivate the Dharma of death through any of the three paths: the long path of the characteristic vehicle, or the near path of the Vajra vehicle, or the swift path of the Great Perfection of Clear Light, so that the great person can accomplish the pure Dharma of death of his own path. Among them, if one particularly cultivates the pure Dharma of death through the path of the Great Perfection of Clear Light, the interval between birth and death will be separated. If one cannot grasp the essential ground of the immortal original nature, one will want to die, and wanting to abandon that vow, one will be caught by the second iron hook of the vow. In this way, dividing the session and the post-session, one meditates alternately on observation and abiding in the main practice of the session. The fundamental intention is to meditate in the temporary state through the subsequent attainment of the path. Now, although such impermanent death will come, if it does not end like a fire extinguished or water dried up, but one does not disappear after death and must take rebirth, it is said that after death there is no other place to go except this place of samsara, so one must contemplate the faults of samsara. Samsara is the three realms, and the faults are the three sufferings. Like this, the precious human body endowed with the eighteen freedoms and endowments

Because of the power of impermanence and death, the suffering of birth, aging, sickness, and death in this life chases after us. The suffering of the bardo welcomes us. It connects to the suffering of the next life. When the bardo faintness clears, initially not knowing that one has died, seeing one's relatives and others crying out, saying, "He hasn't died, he's still here!" But they cannot see or hear. Thinking, "Have I really died now?" Then observing whether the sun has a shadow, whether there are footprints on the sand, whether there is a reflection in the water. If these are not present, one thinks, "I must have died," and because of fear, four terrifying sounds arise: a sound like the great earth shaking all at once; a sound like the three thousand great thousand worlds being consumed by fire; a sound like the three thousand great thousand worlds being scattered by wind; and a sound like the three thousand great thousand worlds being destroyed by water. There are also three terrifying precipices: generally, like a time of dim darkness, the intrinsic color of desire, wherever one looks, everything is a dazzling red; the intrinsic color of hatred, wherever one looks, everything is a glaring white; the intrinsic color of ignorance, wherever one looks, everything is a pitch-black darkness. When these appearances arise, those with purified karma are greeted by heroes and dakinis, and are liberated directly upwards. Those who have committed the five heinous crimes, according to the tantric tradition, will see the appearance of karmic agents and, as described in the sutras, many messengers of Yama, and will fall directly downwards. Others, even if not for forty-nine days, may remain for three sevens or four days, etc., the time being uncertain. If one remains for forty-nine days, for more than half the time one sees the previous body, and for less than half the time one sees the body of the next life. If one is born in hell or as a hungry ghost, one sees the appearance of going head downwards. If one is born as an animal, one sees the appearance of horns on the head and crawling forward. If one is born as a god or a human, one sees the appearance of going head upwards and the light of the sun and moon shining on the body. In this way, the suffering of the bardo connects to the suffering of the next life, and the suffering of the next life begins. Another way of guiding is that, although the guidance on the results of karma has been explained previously, here, as the Tathagata said when first teaching the Dharma of the Four Noble Truths, "Suffering should be known," so first, one should understand suffering.
