Unless I have arranged a good residence, saying I will not take anyone away. The lifespan of this present life, like an arrow or a candle, is like the strength of a person's fingers and the oil running out. It is unknown whether it will run out today, or tomorrow, or in the latter half of this month, or next month, or next year. Therefore, it is uncertain when one will die. When life runs out and one dies, the Medicine Buddha will not administer medicine, Amitayus will not bestow the longevity empowerment, and Vajrapani will not protect one from dying. Although sudden death can be averted, like a candle being extinguished by the wind before the oil runs out, sudden deaths occur due to four hundred and four types of diseases, eighty thousand types of ghosts, three hundred and sixty types of demons, and so on. Therefore, the lifespan of the people of Jambudvipa is uncertain. Wherever one goes, one will die; whoever one accompanies, one will die; wherever one lives, one will die; whether one has wealth and enjoyment, one will die; whether one does not have them, one will die. Therefore, the duration of life is unknown; it is unknown whether it will run out today, so it is uncertain when one will die. Even if life has not run out, it is uncertain when one will die due to sudden causes. Reflect on this from the depths of your heart, again and again. At the time of death, nothing can stop it. At the time of death, no one can help, except for the sacred Dharma, not food, clothing, shelter, enjoyment, parents, relatives, or friends. Even if one is the guru of thousands of monks, there is no place to take even one monk. Even if one is the leader of millions of people, one has no power to take even one servant. Even if one possesses the enjoyment of the entire Jambudvipa, one has no power to take even a needle and thread. Even the body that one has cherished and protected must be left behind. One sleeps on the last bed, consumes the last food, wears the last clothes, speaks the last words, and is surrounded by the last relatives and friends. When the time of death arrives, no one can stop it, and there is no power to stay. All relatives, friends, and enjoyments cannot be relinquished, and one does not follow after them. Instead, one goes naked, empty-handed, with one's arms tucked in, on the great path to the next life. All the sins accumulated for the sake of parents, relatives, and friends cannot be shared with anyone; one must bear them oneself and go.
