It became pure. Bhikshu Deva-datta, any woman who saw him immediately transformed from the state of being a woman and received the prediction of non-retrogression. Countless beings, including gods, also entered into the supreme enlightenment. ༈ Moreover, in the past, beyond countless and immeasurable eons, in a world called "Rain-born," a Tathagata named "King of Fearful Sound" appeared and taught the Dharma to the Shravakas and Bodhisattvas. The duration of his life was equal to the number of grains of sand in four Ganges rivers. After his passing, the true Dharma remained for as many eons as there are dust particles in Jambudvipa. The semblance of the true Dharma remained for as many eons as there are dust particles in the four continents. After that semblance of the Dharma also disappeared, in that world, other Tathagatas appeared with the same name, "King of Fearful Sound," numbering twenty kotis of nayutas. Among them, after the true Dharma of the first King of Fearful Sound had disappeared, and the semblance of the true Dharma was also nearing its end, his teachings were suppressed by arrogant monks, and there appeared a monk named "Ever-Despising Bodhisattva." Why was he called Ever-Despising? Because that Bodhisattva, whenever he saw any of the four assemblies, such as monks, would go to them and say: 'I, O venerable ones, do not despise you, for you are not to be despised.' Why is that? Because all of you will practice the conduct of a Bodhisattva, and you will attain perfect and complete enlightenment. Thus, no matter which sentient being he saw, he would only proclaim these words, without receiving teachings or reciting scriptures. In this way, whenever he proclaimed these words to monks and others, most of them would become angry with him, generate distrust, and then scold and slander him, saying: 'Why does this monk, without being asked, say that he has no mind of contempt, and despise us himself?' They did not think in this way, not wishing to receive the prediction of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment.

He is called "Abuser." Even though many years passed after that great Bodhisattva was scolded and insulted in this way, he did not generate anger or harmful thoughts towards anyone. Even if someone threw tiles and sticks at him, he would proclaim from afar, 'I do not despise you.' Those arrogant retinues always heard him proclaim in this way, so they named him "Abuser." When that constantly abused one was near the time of death, he heard the Dharma of the Holy Lotus Sutra. He heard the verses of this Dharma spoken by the Tathagata King of Awesome Sound, which numbered twenty million nayutas, and he heard and retained them from the sound in space without anyone speaking them. Thus, he obtained such purity from the eye to the mind. Afterwards, he blessed his life force for another twenty million nayutas years and proclaimed this Dharma. Those arrogant four assemblies, including monks, who had previously always called him "Abuser," saw his power of miraculous abilities, the power of his vows, his courage, and the vast power of his wisdom, and all gathered there to listen to the Dharma. Furthermore, countless beings were also established in unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. That Bodhisattva, after passing away from there, also pleased two hundred billion Ganges sands of Tathagatas named King of Moon Sound, and in all of them, he upheld and taught the Dharma of the Lotus Sutra. Due to his previous roots of virtue, he gradually pleased two hundred billion Ganges sands of Tathagatas named King of Sound Sovereignty, and in all of them, he upheld the Holy Lotus Sutra and truly explained it to the four assemblies. He also pleased two hundred billion Ganges sands of Buddhas named King of Cloud Sound, and from all of them, he upheld this Dharma and truly explained it to others. At all those times, he was endowed with completely pure eyes and so forth. That Bodhisattva found and honored, respected, offered, and gave to two million billion Tathagatas.

Moreover, having made offerings and reverence to many billions of hundreds of thousands of Buddhas, and having held and taught this very White Lotus of the True Dharma in all of them, the Buddha who attained enlightenment through that root of virtue is none other than the Blessed One himself. In a previous life, he was the Bodhisattva named Ever Disparaging. At that time, if he had not held this very White Lotus of the True Dharma, he would not have quickly attained enlightenment. Because he held it, he quickly became a Buddha. When he became Ever Disparaging, those who were disparaged by many entourages and generated harmful thoughts did not hear the sound of the Three Jewels for twenty billion hundreds of thousands of eons, and having experienced suffering in Avici hell for ten thousand eons, they were liberated from that karmic obscuration. That Bodhisattva himself matured them into unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Among this entourage, five hundred Bodhisattvas such as Good Protector, as well as five hundred nuns and five hundred laywomen, all were made irreversible from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Therefore, holding this Dharma is of great significance. Even after the Buddha's passing into nirvana, one should hold and possess this category of the White Lotus of the True Dharma, for by doing so, one will attain perfect enlightenment," he said. Furthermore, in a past age, in a world system called "Extremely Wonderful Observation" in the Flower Origin kalpa, a Tathagata named Blazing Exertion appeared. At that time, that world system was extremely pure, adorned with marvelous arrangements, there was no mention of women, and all beings were born miraculously from lotuses. When that Tathagata taught the assembly about diligence, this Blessed One was the Bodhisattva called Strong Armor. When he asked how to exert diligence, the Tathagata taught extensively about diligence based on the four aspects of initiation, slowing down, individual examination, and accomplishment. The Bodhisattva Strong Armor initiated diligence, and after hundreds of millions of years, he attained the tolerance that accords with it, and having passed away while still exerting diligence, he was born in front of that Tathagata, heard the Dharma, and exerted

又作如是行持，复作死亡之时，令八万四千佛陀欢喜，并于彼等劫之莲花处所生之佛陀处精进，恒常寻觅善法。如是精进，令百千菩萨退转，最终于无上菩提中成佛，如《慧海经》所说。又，往昔燃灯佛之更早之前，有如来名为天王出现之时，彼世界中天人皆由莲花化生，亦无女人与交合之名。亦无声闻缘觉，然一切皆为具信向佛法、根器敏锐之菩萨。仅思饮食衣物等，便自然而生，如兜率天之天人。临终迁逝之时，亦升高七多罗树之高度，示现无生无死之法，并随意化生于佛陀所居之净土。彼佛及其眷属不穿袈裟，然皆着净天衣。彼处亦无戒律之安立，因一切皆具无生之忍力。于彼处，如来所说之法，一切皆能知晓，并能获得忍辱与陀罗尼等。除彼如来法王之外，更无其他国王。彼处，如来于为七万二千菩萨授记之时，世尊于彼眷属中化现为菩萨无垢清净光，心想：此等受记之菩萨于忆念、智慧、精进等方面皆不胜于我，为何我未受记？如来知其心念，便说：善男子，汝于未来将为燃灯佛所授记。彼菩萨欢喜踊跃，升至空中，说道：燃灯佛纵然于恒河沙数劫后方才出现，然我必能获得一切智智，因诸佛已真实宣说。如是语毕。其后，有如来名为极明等

Having acted in this way, and again at the time of death, making eighty-four thousand Buddhas rejoice, and from those Buddhas who arose in the lotus source of that kalpa, exerting diligence, constantly seeking virtuous Dharma. With such diligence, many hundreds of thousands of Bodhisattvas were turned back, and finally attained enlightenment in unsurpassed Bodhi, as stated in the Sutra of the Ocean of Wisdom. Furthermore, in a previous life, even before Dipamkara, when a Tathagata named Devaraja appeared, in that world, gods and humans were born miraculously from lotuses, and there was not even the name of women or sexual intercourse. There were also no Shravakas or Pratyekabuddhas, but all were Bodhisattvas who were devoted to the Dharma, with sharp faculties. Food, clothing, and so on arose merely by thinking of them, like the gods of Tushita. At the time of death and transference, they also rose to the height of seven tala trees and taught the Dharma of no birth and no death, and were born intentionally in the Buddha's pure land. That Buddha and his retinue did not wear saffron robes, but all wore pure divine garments. There, there was no establishment of precepts, because all had the power of endurance of no birth. There, all who heard the Dharma taught by the Tathagata would know it and would obtain forbearance and dharanis, and so on. There was no other king except that Tathagata, the King of Dharma. There, when that Tathagata prophesied to seventy-two thousand Bodhisattvas, the Bhagavan appeared in that retinue as a Bodhisattva named Immaculate Pure Light, thinking, "These Bodhisattvas who have been prophesied are not superior to me in terms of mindfulness, wisdom, or diligence, so why have I not been prophesied?" Knowing his thoughts, the Tathagata said, "Son of good family, in the future, you will be prophesied by the Buddha Dipamkara." That Bodhisattva rejoiced and rose into the sky, saying, "Even if the Buddha Dipamkara appears after as many kalpas as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River, I am certain to attain omniscience, because the Buddhas have spoken truthfully." Having spoken thus. After that, there were Tathagatas named Prabhasa, and so on.
